L3s are getting a bit boring so I thought I'd get back into L4s. I used to dabble in these with a Typhoon ages ago, but my low skills made it took so long that L3s were more profitable. Still, fun > profit and I'm all set to have another stab.
A Domi looks like my best bet (I hate Ravens). I've got 870K in drones (+ Drone Int 4), still waiting on some training for heavies and sentries. Before I tweak the nozzle of the SP fountain, I see a lot of people moving towards sentry drones for L4s.
How good are they? Are they just a sniping tool to put in damage before enemies come into the range of heavy drones, or can they be effective all the way down to 0km? They're pretty big... looks like I could squeeze in two sets (long-range and best-tracking, or based on damage type?) and have room for some mediums and lights. Or one set + heavies + mediums + lights?
Go on, save me a 100M mistake before I start.

I'm exceptionally new with my sentries, so feel free to take my experience with a grain of salt. But they are very good at one shot popping a bunch of frigates at long range, as long as they're flying right at you. They start getting any transverse, and the sentries start missing. I haven't done much testing, but it also seems like a full set of heavies do better at taking out an orbiting BS rat than a full set of sentries.
So personally, I'll get about 50-70k out (depending on the sentry range), stop, deploy them, and have them start taking sniper shots at the frigates in a group of rats. If they take them all out, I have them start targetting the cruisers. Once they're within about 30k or so, I scoop up the sentries and launch whatever drones are appropriate to take on the remaining rats.
So they do have their uses in L4 missions. There's enough space in a Domi for a full set of rat specific light, medium, heavy, and sentry drones, so might as well bring them along. Just don't expect them to do most of the DPS.

a lot of the npc's will be mwd-ing to you before you can really do any damage with them.. their low tracking renders them pretty useless after the npc's have started orbiting you.
tried it and on a select few battleships and frigs it worked okay.. but just stuffing the regular drones in the hold gets the job done more effectively though.

yap, I use them to pop frig from far away + get the agro from groups... when frig mwd to you they have no transversal+mwd makes them a bigger target, so get your rage up and pop them from far away... at about 30k, pop heavies and finish remaining group ----------------------------------------- Your ad could be here :) |

Thanks chaps. I'll drop in a set of sentries and heavies to cover all ranges and have a play around with each.
Need to get some praccy with this on L3s while I get the old drone skills up.
2x Heavy Diminishing Power System Drain I 1x Civilian Gatling Railgun (for the stigma, and to draw aggro!) 1x Small Tractor Beam I 2x Drone Link Augmentor I
5x Cap Recharger II
2x Large Armor Repairer II 4x Armor (Active) Hardener II 1x Capacitor Power Relay I
Seems to be the best setup I've pieced together from a good forum search. Let's see how it goes.

I've used sentries quite a bit for various missions and my ideal usage is:
Deploy 3 sentries 30 - 40km from where I plan to do most of my fighting. Charge into the fray, and releasing 2 combat drones appropriate to my needs. Having the rats aggroed on me, 30Km from the sentries, means that transversal (for the sentries) is nowhere as critical a factor as if I deployed the sentries and squatted there with them.
And sentries are... well... awesome.
Still screwing the dictionary, baby. One long word at a time!
