Switch - hell yeah.
If we had a game with proper factions acting like real factions - docking rights needed etc, "passport control" at empire entry points (ie, big fleets at the borders to gank you if you are not wanted) docking fees, continuus auction of factory and lab slots, good actually used for thigns in game etc.
i would (as was said by another earlier) by a whole new box and cd and switch in an instant.
this is needed soooooo badly its not funny

What I would find amusing would be to get this system in place, and just click it on one day, with about 30 minutes warning.
Now *that* would be an event.
Yulai would go nova though, with all the people returning to their home empires on pain of death, people running from their alliance offices at pirate bases, pirates running from pirate bases. The chokepoints back into the empire would overload.

as for penalties, there already are penalties. If I'm trained in Gallente BS, then I can't fly a Caldari BS until I buy and train the skills, so you're looking at 4.5M isk and about two weeks real time (minimum). You train the same skill, to the same level, you should be as proficient at piloting as anyone else.
Would people be so eager to penalise this if they hadn't already picked the right race for the ship they want to fly?
When I bought the game, I knew nothing of race differences, so should I be penalised for not picking the ideal race for piracy? IMO no.

mmmm Aegis cruiser,
Does anybody actually use mixed fleets for pvp? or is it just all Battleships and cruisers, no frigates?
Love the thread, though i doubt youll see any of the ideas ever implemented. More likely a further mixing of the sub species as the Elite frigates finially appear. Wouldnt it be cool to knick a Concorde BS lol.
More ships, more tech would be nice though, so if they cant/wont change the history of the game least we can hope for is race specific Tech 2 gear.

.. since CCP is working on "fixing" the standing system (http://myeve.eve-online.com/updates/indevelopment.asp) I would recomend them to take a look at this thread, contains a lot of good ideas.
Yeah - this is just ramble in order to bump it so that some dev MIGHT see it.

Totallyt agree with all the stuff about factions. It would give depth to the game.
Nice idea about the different types of ships. I have always thought that ship combat should of been like the 'star trek federation'. The real tactical combat happens in the refitting bay, out in space its just target and open fire, with limited choices on movement.
When are they going to change the speed of frigates and cruisers, I can easily with the extra low slots get my battleship faster than a cruiser.
I would love a developer comment on any of this. Its the being kept in the dark that really hacks people off the most I think.
