OK, so my corp is getting bored in empire and wants to join a 0.0 alliance to mine better ores, fight bigger rats and participate in alliance space defense without the restrictions of security standing loss, etc... all the FUN stuff. The multi million monthly alliance fee is not a problem, We can cover all that by dedicating one weekend a month to lvl4 missions. But there is a problem: ôPOS Newbienessö. What race we should buy the tower? What size? What structures to put around it? How to pimp it nicely?
We want a POS that could mine something and 'possibly' generate enough income to sustain itself. We want it to have adequate defenses. And that's the paradox, If we get more CPU for more reactions and stuff, we lose power for the weapons and vice-versa. Having a mixed corp-base of miners and fighters, it's hard to agree on a 'balanced' setup.
Any suggestions? |

Suggestions? Don't bother. With a few exceptions* will be unopen to you the entire POS market is in decline.
*Ferrogel, Fermionic condensates and every raw that trades at 3K pu or more.

So I can start seeing the POS as just an alliance-related expense and nothing else? |

No, see it as a useful base if you put a ship maintance array and a corp hanger on, and if you can fit an intensive refining array a mining base as well.

be sure to talk with your alliance before setting up POS.
some (who control a couple outposts) dont want you to have a refining array, but instead to bring your ore to the outpost so they can tax it. still often worth it because of the higher base refine in outposts compared to POSs. ammo manufacturing arrays could be very worthwhile too.

Consider a "research" POS stuffed full of labs. How much defence you need depends on where the POS is and whether it is holding sovreignty. If it's not, and it's near a core alliance system, it only needs minimal defences. The alliance should help you out if it's attacked by anything serious.
