I've never tried harvesting gas in regular space, but here are the basics for doing it in wormhole space:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqOshUihedI&index=12&list=PLBD59459E625C2A27
And the Venture with tech 2 gas harvesters is probably the best gas harvesting ship in the game, so I wouldn't bother with any other ship.
You'll need to learn to scan signatures down with probes too, so research up on that.
Research the following topics on YouTube and general Google searches:

There are two types of gas clouds, the one's found in k-space and those in w-space.
I haven't done a k-space harvesting for a long time but those clouds are used for making combat boosters and they used to exist in only a specific regions of space but now you can find them even in high sec by using you scanner probes.
The one in w-space are more lucrative as they're used to make T3-cruisers and destroyers and you can make billions with that gas but there are a few caveats such as the usual w-hole security issues and the fact that all sites after c3 wh contain sleepers (usually a BS or maybe 3 and some escorts which neut and e-war like going out of style).
You're in luck however that sleepers have 15min spawn time before they show up and then someone has to blow them up and sometimes you might get lucky and someone has "cleared the site" so you can drain the clouds in relative piece.
For gas mining you have two options a venture :
Traits Mining Frigate bonuses (per skill level): 5% bonus to Mining yield 5% reduction in Gas Cloud Harvesting duration
Role bonus: 2+ bonus to ship warp core strength 100% bonus to Mining and Gas Cloud Harvesting yield
and the prospect
Traits Mining Frigate bonuses (per skill level): 5% bonus to Mining yield 5% reduction in Gas Cloud Harvesting duration
Expedition Frigates bonuses (per skill level): 5% reduction in ship signature radius 5% bonus to Mining yield
Role bonus: Can fit Covert Ops Cloaking Device and Covert Cynosural Field Generator Cloak reactivation delay reduced to 5 seconds 100% reduction in Cloaking Devices CPU requirement 100% bonus to Mining and Gas Cloud Harvesting yield
Biggest difference for these two is their means of escape, drone bay and their cargo hold which is 10k for the prospect. Now it's pretty much up to if you prefer the cov ops cloak over warp strenght bonus, I prefer the cloak. Venture can field 5 light drones which is a good thing but they are more of a deterrent though people have ganked with ventures before so it's not unheard of and of c. prospector has 0 drones.
For gas harvesting both ships preform the same but prospects 10k of cargo space is golden though. |

Really 5? I thought it was 2...

How much time you need to fill this 10k? I mean - if sleepers come in 15 minutes, is it just about time for 5 K venture cargo to get filled?

Forgot to add that those sleepers drop the usual "blue loot" so if you can actually kill them you can make nice side profit from it (5-6mils or so). Most gas sites are easily cleared with Gila's or T3's mainly because of heavy neuting kills any active tanks (and 12 BS can and will suck a dreadnought bone dry in a 30 seconds or so). |

ye, 2 is correct I just had figure of 5 in my mind fro some reason.
You need to clear up several sites before you have completely filled in your cargo hold as 15min isn't enough to fill it even with boosts, however I rarely if ever need to 'ninja mine' my sites as I live in a wh "permanently" so might be wrong in how long it takes to fill it up. |

To get a start, use this fit:
[Venture, Gas]
Warp Core Stabilizer I
1MN Microwarpdrive I Sensor Booster I, Scan Resolution Script Survey Scanner I
Gas Harvester I Gas Harvester I Core Probe Launcher I, Core Scanner Probe I
Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I Small Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizer I Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
This fit is reliably effective and expendable. Don't bother with drones, you aren't killing anything with this. Using this, scan for wormholes and then scan for gas sites in those wormholes using the probes and probe launcher. Scanning is best done from a safe spot (ask if you don't know how to make one). The idea here is to get in, get the goods, and get out. Pound d-scan liberally. I use an overview setting that only shows ships, probes, and sleepers. Be ready to bounce the moment you see anything show up on your screen. Try not to use implants. Always carry at least one extra set of probes.
EDIT: Oh, and specifically avoid the "Ordinary Perimeter Reservoir"! That one has guns in it from the get go and will kill you real quick.
Good luck! Hit me up if you'd like to discuss the finer points of ninja huffing.

The problem is, once you start adding in salvaging sleeper wrecks into your scheme everything gets more complicated, involved and time-intensive.
I tend to think that beginners should start with focusing on one task and one task only in wormhole farming. They can add extra tasks and ships to the mix once they get their groove going.
Just zip around in a Venture, find gas sigs, farm them for 20 minutes and then bug off before the Sleepers arrive and move on to the next one.
Once you get the hang of it, you may want to add a Covert Ops scanning ship to make scanning and bookmarking simpler in addition to the Venture, and then you can consider a Drake or a Gila or something to do som PvE farming, as well as a salvaging destroyer. |
