I created my character last christmas. Played the free trail and quit. Then picked it up in april, played for about a month and then quit again. Now I'm back and I read that if I get hold to ransom, I will pay after my character age.
So will I have to either die or pay a very overprised ransom if I get cuaght in a pirate hold up :/?

I'm in the same boat, 6 month old character but only 1 1/2 months worth of skills. Problem is that I doubt the scurvy buggers will buy our stories if we try to explain :)

Really no way of knowing you stopped playing, so we base our decision on what we can gather within 10 seconds + the time of the fight, and hope you can pay, if not, then apologies but it's bad business to let people go free :)

I met a newer pirate the other day in a low sec system who said that he ransomed pods and then if they didn't pay let them go anyway. I told him that pirates are only as good as their word and it goes both ways -- if they do pay you have to let them go, but if they don't pay you can't let them go.
Sorry - don't mean to hijack the thread. Earlier today I ransomed a caracal for 5 million. He got all mad at me as if I was asking for an outrageous amount, but according to his employment history it was feasable that he had a decent amount of t2. It's a judgement call - pirates don't know how much you've trained or whether you have the skills to fly the ship you're in effectively.
P.S. the Caracal guy didn't pay up so he lost his ship. Afterwards he of course whined about lag. Lag works both ways - I was lagged as well - but the fact is that he shouldn't have let me catch him and he knew it.
Another time I tried to ransom a maller for 2 million and he logged off. I popped his ship without hesitation.

Well, not really. Some ships yield more ISK in loot then the original ransom would've been. As someone said above, ransoming is fun.

If he doesn't want to pay he doesn't want to pay, don't have a go at him for it.
You'd never get my isk either. Then again you'd never find me in a position to get ransomed (touches wood).

Ohis: "I've only played about half my time since character creation. Believe me or not, but I can only pay 5M/2M/whatever."

as other people have said, if when they ransom you, you make an offer that you can aford quite a few pirates (i'm guessing, i know i would) will take you up on it as long as it's not too small. i've avoided being podded (or having to pay the ransom at all for that matter) using this method and i've accepted it too.
edit - i'm in the same boat as you as well, being a 17 month old character who has at best a years worth of xp (i know guys who are much younger who have similar sp cos they have better learning skills than me)

planet dance drop BM's between planets to make quick safe spots, warp to antoehr planet drop another BM etc...
I played on a older charcter for 3 years i lost many ships but was never put in the posistion to be ransomed for my pod.
