Space is big, empty, impersonal and lonely, we all already know this is a bit of a problem in Eve hence the recurrent discussions about planetary interaction and more interactive space stations.
A number of the station interiors have extra landing pads visible, putting other players ships on this would greatly improve the feel of stations for very little effort.
Key details 1: ships displayed should be from other players in the station, so if there is only me and a friend in the station I want to see his ship 2: use the cloak uncloak animation for adding and removing ships just like with jump gates 3: only add ships when they dock, don't fill a recently vacated slot with someone who is already docked 4: yes it could be used for intel gathering, but you could just as easily sit outside the station 5: don't need to display the fittings, just need the ship models 6: don't need to update the display when they change ship, it doesn't matter 7: yes everyone will see different stuff, it doesn't matter
Now for the details:
Art and other resource changes 1: every station with extra landing pads needs a list of location/angle/scale tuples for where to put the models of ships on those pads
Server and client server protocol changes 1: the on dock list of players in station needs to have a field added for their ship type 2: the new player arrived message needs the same field
Client logic 1: on dock pick a few random players and display their ships on the pads 2: if one of the currently displayed players leaves the station "warp" thier ship out 3: if there is a pad free when someone docks "warp" their ship in
and that's all there is to it at least in theory

Space is big, impersonal and lonely, yes; but why does the station have to be that? I say: Make the station hell of a lot smaller on the inside. Right now the shiphangar is at least twice as big as the entire station and I have no idea where the other 30 ppl docked get fitted. Make the shiphangar much smaller, Diff rooms for diff shiptypes.
1:In the top you have a large bayhall there all smaller ships like frigates and destroyers are docked This large room looks a bit like the shiphalls for the rebels in the old starwarsfilmsthere ships are standing everywere on the floor and you get an overwiew of all ships online and docked.
2: One level below larger ships like cruisers and haulers are docked. Here it more look like a drydock and your ship hardly fit in the dock. Welders are working on your shiphull and you can see other ships being fixed besides you, every ship is maybe only 100m from eachother.
3:Below the cruiserlevel you find Battleships. they are docked also in large drydocks and also welders are working on your ship (I like the idea with welders and teh sparkels falling long the hull). Battleships are so big that you can't even see the entire ship. If you have an apoc you can only see half the ship. The rest is too faar back in the dark hangar. you can pan around and see the front of other battleships lying next to you.
4:Maybe we need another level for even larger ships but I belive you got my point by now.
MAKE THE SHIPHANGAR MUC MUCH SMALLER AND MAKE DOCKED SHIPS VISIBLE

What about those busy systems like Jita?
You really want to load 100 ships every time you dock? --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

how about ships in hangars? My corp has hundreds of frigates/cruisers ready to fly at any given time.

I think this whole thing of seeing other players ships in a station is great.

It's not so hard to cap the number of shown ships at say, 10. ______________ Join the Family |

"You really want to load 100 ships every time you dock?"
what do you mean load 100 ships? you only need to load at max 1*numberofuniqueshiptypes and that's it, everything else is simply a copy of the 3dobject, for example, 10 people, 2 in ravens, 8 in rifters. you'd load 1 raven, copy it once, load 1 rifter, copy it 8 times. there is no "load time" I doubt even this is what's needed as I'm sure eve keeps every ship in cache and preloaded (you notice when someone comes into the system at a gate you don't have to wait for it to load) it's not a big deal and purely asthetic nothng hard at all to implement.

Ofcourse you don't have to load 100 ships and I also think the copyidea was nice. Otherwise the larger ships in drydocks are big and you maybe only can see 2 or 4 other ships beside you (i or two in each direction)... still only the nose of the ships to.
