Hi,
I currently have and
Epox nforce4 ultra motherboard
amd 3500 +
1gb ram
bfg 7800 gt
This system is fine for running everything today but I want to upgrade as I am quitting my job and going to college so I wont have much money next year and want to future proof it for a year.My budget is around ú300 or $550.
Is the intel core duo a good option? A lot of review sites claim this easily outperforms AMD chips. Are the AMD X2 dual core any good? That would fit into my current mainboard without upgrading it.

I would get another gig of ram, a core 2 and a dfi mobo if you hve enough cash left.

the new intel dualcores are the best you can buy atm.
finaly, after many many years, intel was able to build a better cpu than amd, made me cry a bit   i'm using amd cpu since the 486 dx4/100 :)
the amd are still very good cpus, but the intel are cheaper and faster.
cheapest way to upgrade:
amd x2, as fast as your wallet goes
another 1gb ram
or buy a 2gb dual channel set
and sell the ram you have :)

err you have a MB that supports both intel and AMD chipsets?!?

Seems pretty good to me just add an extra gig of ram and a duel core processor an intell Pentium D should and and they are cheap now as wel on certain sites.
