Is it too much to ask to have a mining barge that can handle a little bit of firepower? I'm not asking for T2 Torp launchers and the capacity to take down an angry megathron. But a couple of reasonable guns next to strip miners that could knock out < 50k rats when coupled with some drones?
....que the complaints...

a barge is ment to be weak you can easily stay there when you have someone else around that can kill off those rats.

Yep, drones, used them in all the way down to 0.5 against rats without problems. I fit a remote armor rep to my 2nd account character who hauls just in case they ever get me into armor. I've only ever had to use it once and that was I was too busy chatting on Corp and didn't notice the rats spawn

Large barge with T2 drones will do it. Or at least it does for me. You do have to pay attention though. If you're a bit late deploying drones because you are AFK, you're dead.
But if I have drones ready I can generally take down all rats in 0.5 and higher space before I get into trouble.
Of course if you can do it with the large T1 barge, you can do it with T2 barges at your leisure...

You don't need Tech II drones. I use a Covertor with 5 Hammerheads (change as per the damage type of rat you are seeing) and they defend me in 0.5 no problems, don't even 1/5 through my shields. But I do agree you have to pay attention.

I have always found CCP's ship designs rather extreme, for some reason indy ships have always been a bit crap. Take freighters for instance, who in their right mind would design such a massive ship without any deffenses?!?!, crazy.
Surely when you have a ship which can carry millions-billions of isk worth of equipment, you would want to somehow make sure you have something to at least give you a chance of surviving.
Crazy.
As for the 'get corpies/friends to help', unfortunately not everyone wants to do the same thing at the same time and place.

A retriever can kill any 0.4 spawn easily with hobgoblin II drones. Let the drones orbit you all the time and they should draw some of the agro of the spawn. Instruct them to kill the rats that's shooting at them and then instruct them to kill the rest.
Have a small armor rep (named preferably) and fill your remaining mid and low slots with cap rechargers and cap power relays. These will give you enough cap to keep the strips running and let you use your repper as well.
A hulk can also tank rats easily. Tech II medium drones and good drone skills will kill rat BS no problem.

As others have already said, drones can easily do this. I've been doing just fine in .3 in a Covetor with 1 t1 armor rep, and 5 med t1 drones, and Drone Interfacing up to 3. Handles the rats just fine.

A guy in my alliance sits in 0.0 all day with a Hulk and T2 drones, and he can tank all the Conq spawns no problem.

I just follow my second account's retriever around with my primary account's arbitrator. Drone swarms + light scrambling is enough for 0.5.
