Why not? There are people of a multitude of languages here, some can't speak english and you have to go to google translator every time you want to speak to them. The new IGB is good for this, but why can't we have a sort of automatised tool that shortens the time to response? Thanks.

-1: has done no research The best tools that exist today are so pitiful that they fail to translate simple, well formed sentences to the point meaning is completely lost or even sometimes the opposite of what was originally written. Oh, and I would know, I know 4 (some only to the A1-A2 level - a European scale) foreign languages.
Here's an example of how what you said would be translated into Japanese, and then back to English, using a google translator

CCP is actually working on an auto translator for about 5 languages if memory serves, the catch is it s being planned for WOD . Given it's going to be carbon based it could probably be shoehorned into eve and that would be awesome.
Yes I actually said something nice about carbon for a change. The advantage of a bad memory is that one can enjoy the same good things for the first time several times.
One will rarely err if extreme actions be ascribed to vanity, ordinary actions to habit, and mean actions to fear. |

called Serberus(sp?) I agree with several people: CCP needs to focus most of eve's recources on FIS, but the development of WIS still needs to continue, just as a slower and more efficient pace. In eve I wish to be more than just a machine. |

- @ Schnoo: I know that online translator do not work really well, but they are used and are the only alternative if you can't speak that language. Congratulations to you if you can speak 4 different languages, but many out there can't even speak two and they are the ones in need of help.
Frankly, I just think that you have never had to communicate to a dude that does not speak any of the languages you know. I can speak English, French and Italian but there are a lot of eastern people that can't understand any of these languages (and I am sorry for not being able to speak russian and german), and that's why EVE client is localised. Obviously I can't use an automatic translator to talk about philosophy, but I just need to translate things like "let me use your custom office".
- Cerberus does not have anything to do with an autotranslator. Please read the devblogs. It is just an in-house framework that CCP developed to produce localisation of the client better and faster.

No built in translation. Even best solutions over there like Google Translate, will give very bad translations for anything except most basic sentences. I don't want ugly computer translations in Eve online, and I'm sure most will agree with me. And these translations can't be monitored and can happen to be offensive, too In a game that's 12+?
People don't know the language? Most children in the world learn at least one foreign language during the course of their primary education. Somewhere, two. One of them is most often English. If it isn't we have German, Russian and Japanese.
You may wish to lobby CCP to translate to other languages, most importantly Spanish and French. But human should translate and not a machine! |

Google translate is fine, as long as you're not trying to interact in a speedy manner.
Anyway, an in game translator is not a good way to spend CCP's resources. |

I'm somehow undecided about it. Automatic translation still needs to be read with a grain of salt, and I think due to miscommunication it would do more harm than good in EvE.
On the other hand, even right now with Google Translate noone can safely insult others in a foreign language thinking they (the targets of the insults) wouldn't understand what he's saying...

Two things: First, eastern people are Chinesse, Jamapesse, etc. not Germans. Second, if CCP could create a virtual translator that had the comprehension or a language to the level of understanding the meaning, not just switching word from a language by word of another , then they would be not hosting a videogame, for they would have invented a powerfull tool that today none has -including military intelligences of the world-. Is up the the logistics of corporations to have an agenda of in game translators in case such an urgence arises. Add me, just in case, Spanish/English translator, tips are expected. Normally, though I understand what those Russians mean when they start locking and shoting at me. |

This would allow people to see where another player is coming from. There's the high possibility that there are players out there who do not want that.
On the other hand, being able to use pre-defined sentences where one does not see the language the other guy speaks ... would be a nice idea.
Altough i've rarely encountered anybody who's not speaking english, and pre-defined sentences wouldn't really help in most situations anyway.
"Ransom, 100 Million ISK" ... that would make sense, though. xD Inappropriate signature removed. Spitfire |

The fact is that people out there are using tools like google translator to communicate.
Those translators suck at translating complex sentences, but people keep using them successfully to translate really basic ones, like:
"Go away" "I need station/custom office access" "Ransom 10m isk" "GF" "fly safe" "**** you" "n00b" "I set taxes to 30%" "Tuesday, CTA 12:30 eve time"
I repeat, I don't need to translate Dante Alighieri or Shakespeare, neither I have to translate long or complex sentences, just basic and common concepts. |
