I never ransom.
I just blow ships up (all kinds, and at all .4 and below locations - stations, gates, belts, etc). Then scoop their loot.
And I am always nice in local chat.
So, can I still call myself a pirate?

Depends... Do you wear any of the following while doing it: - Eyepatch - Wooden Leg - Parrot (On shoulder) - Triangle shaped hat or bandana?
While engaging your customer, do you greet them with: - Yarr - Shiver me Timbers - Sail Ho

nah, all the 'real pirates' left this game back in '04, or so the carebears would have you believe. I believe you're more of a PvP'er who likes to keep his system clean of cans.

no, because you ask. pirates do not care what they are, pirates just do what they want. piracy is the total freedom that doesn't stop at the freedom of others, unless they have bigger guns.

Says the sniper from Ami shooting at nubs travelling afk. Anyways, great sum of isk you got there on that head of yours. Rather wealthy nubs!
Pirating is a matter of perspective. For instance running through 0.0 neighbouring region can be called "behind enemy lines raid" or "the fricking pirates are roaming again".
Why ask about it?

Interesting question. Did Capt Morgan or Jean Lafitte call themselves pirates? And if so, was it in public or only when with other pirates? My guess is that they always preferred to keep their profession secret, in hopes of avoiding either theft or justice. Does a cat burgler call himself a cat burgler, or a dope dealer call himself a dope dealer? I think not. Why invite unnecessary trouble?

No, you cannot call yourself a pirate unless you fill out the declaration of intent to plunder form 2zx08-b, the statement of disregard for imperial law form 89921-ee7, in triplicate, and supply them to the appropriate bureau of each empire whose borders you intend to raid; furthermore, you must achieve and maintain a minimum bounty requirement. See the local constable for a list of regional requirements.
...unless, that is...you intend to pirate the right to call yourself pirate?? *gasp*

Ah...you've obviously filled ot that little green form that they give you when you enter the US that asks you if you've ever taken part in any terrorist activities. It's obviously designed to entrap extreemly stupid people.
As for the other question...er....I dunno...do you feel like a pirate? There is a very simple test that you can do to tell:
1. When you see a defencesless hauler do you: a.) Shout YARRRRR! (F1,F2,F3,F4, etc) b.) Think..um..I wonder what it's carrying? c.) Feel proud of our brave traders doing their business across the empire
2. When you approach a gate do you think: a.) Ah what multi-tude of mining opportunities await me on the other side of this gate b.) I wonder if any of these other ships are jumping into low sec. c.) Shout YARRRR! and attack the nearest hauler knowing that your tank will hold out against the gate guns for long enough for you to pop it.
3. Do you think a deep safe is: a.) What Bill Gates needs to hold all his money. b.) The vault on the Titanic c.) An unprobable off-plane safe spot that allows you to hide from evil anti-pirates
4. When you see a three month old character mining in a BS in low sec space, do you: a.) Shout YARRR! Warp into the belt and blow his battleship into teenee bitesized pieces b.) Think to yourself...my he's awfully exposed. c.) Are proud to call yourself a member of an empire with such brave mining stalwarts.
If you answered a,c,c,a congratulations you're a true pirate..anything else and your a hopeless carebear who should stay out of low sec .
DF.

This guy has the right idea. Yes, you can call yourself a pirate, all you have to do is believe in your own ability to call yourself a pirate. _________________ "Even space ships pilots get the blues." |

Yes mate, definitely you're a pirate... pay no attention to those naysayers who told you no above... Just play EVE to have fun, not to get a label or play the way others wants you to! If you enjoy blowing people up then kill them all! YAAAAARRRR
