Can someone guide me on the use of BPOs? I've read the guide on eve's website, but would still like to see what's the best way to use it.
What i did (and it's probably wrong) was I researched the BPO ( it was for a misile) and got 20 BPCs with 1500 runs on each. Now I know that some people are getting what seems unlimited amount of items from a BPO, so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong with that first BPO so I can get it right in the future. Thanks to all for their assistance!

The BPO itself can be used to make as many runs as you want. What you did was make copies, which have the limited runs you mentioned. The other kinds of research you can do will apply to that BPO and all copies you make of it afterwards, but you cannot copy or do research on a BPC.

How come I lost the BPO in the process of making copies? Is this the expected result or was I doing something wrong ? I.e can I keep my BPO while making BPC out of it, is it worth it and if so, how?

Did you find the job on the Jobs tab and hit Deliver? Because you should get your BPO back as well as all the copies you made.

yes, but I got just the copies back, not the blueprint! Does it get lost in the process of copying???

Never. You've either hit a bug and need to petition, or aren't telling me something. If the blueprint was in a corp hangar, it will go back to where it came from and the copies will be delivered to the hangar you specified. In the case of a mobile lab, the copies show up at the lab and the blueprint goes back where it started.
But no, blueprint originals are never lost like that.

assuming you trade/sold the bpc's you might have passed off the bpo thinking it was a bpc

You could've made many errors here, either:
-You still have the BPO amongst your BPCs
-You sold the BPO accidentally
-You left the BPO in your hangar
Also, so you can make the missles cheaper, you need to conduct 'Material Research'. For missles, this is normally not much, you need to search for a thread called 'Perfect M.E.' but I think that it's looking at it too in-depth and personally just go with how many runs you think will make a difference. Obviously, the missle runs will won't need many runs (maximum of 10 although you probably don't even need that many), but a ship builder will want to research up to 20 times in order to compete on the market whilst gaining a reasonable amount of profit from his mark-up.
Most people copy their BPOs in order to sell them on escrow, but with Kali the contracts system is coming in so no doubt that the system will change. With missles, if you want to sell the BPCs, normally people collect all 4 damage types and sell them in batches of a couple of hundred thousand depending on how many runs are available (just work out how much they'll save by making it themselves from teh BPC than buying from market and the difference is around what you sell it for).
However, you should've never lost your BPO.

Hey Thanks to all guys, from what you're saying, and since I haven't sold any BPC/BPO's that this should still be in my hangar.. hmm.. well another look is in order, if not.. petitionnnnn..

Which is why I really, really wish they would make the BPCs and BPOs different colors.

use the Science and industry tab - change to my blue oprints and select originals and you should be able to find it.
