1. Remove the visible portraits/names from 'local' entirely.
- Still allow pilots in local to 'broadcast' into 'local' chat if they choose. By doing so, their portrait/name is then visible to all in system until they leave local.
(or)
..keep the portraits/names in 'local' but...
2. Add a Module which can be fitted to ships - "Beacon Dampener" with required "Beacon dispersion" skill to use it.
- When activated it removes your portrait/name from local for X time depending on X skill lvl.
- It has a penalty of 50% reduction in ship scanner range.
- Bonus of 10% reduction per "Beacon dispersion" lvl to above the penalty.
IMO both these ideas are viable and can fit to ingame RP purposes also. ____________________ MOGarmy

That sounds like a stupid idea. How exactly are the miners in low sec and 0.0 suppose to mine when at anytime a recon ship can de-cloak pop and disappear? and plz don't talk about support fleet. Most mining ships can be instapoped so you only need 2 tempest jumping in and blow up your Hulk in 2 volleys before interceptors get to them. Only need a cov-op to scout ahead then have the snipers jump to 15.
Ratting in low sec and below would be a hell to.
Bye bye to low end minerals. Would be nice to see the BS prices go up after the nurf.

The issue isnt really protecting miners or not in unsafe space... if you need help with that, ask your superiors.. im sure they can train you...

He is right.
And if the last changes to local in Kali are any indication, CCP is not about to remove local, they just added visible standings to the portraits...
Without local there is no protection from cloaked ships.

No, he is not right...
CCP have already stated that Local shouldn't "be there" especially as it is used for recon (ie. seeing who is in local)
IMO the standings change is a temp. issue to resolve the whining about 3rd party mods... UNTIL they DO remove Local in maybe Kali 2/3

This thread is for discussion under the assumption that local IS/WILL be removed.
The thread is here to enable discussion around possible ingame mechanics/changes to facilitate com's when local is removed.
It is NOT to discuss whether Local should or should/not be removed... ____________________ MOGarmy

I do not like the idea of giving people options about the chat. either its all in or all out. I would prefer they erase local all together and no one knows anything about whos in the sytenm until the start scanning.
that would be the fair way to do it as no one would know whos where in the first place without scanning for them.

The fear of being ganked when mining in 0.0 with no local to give you advance warning is pretty hollow. The 'gankers' (I hate these l33t wordz) would have no idea you were mining the system anyway, so unless they go around each and every belt in every sytem they pass thru looking for victims they wont find you.
Just take a rake of 192 AU scan probes and keep firing 3 out and scanning. You will see anyone coming b4 they find you, unless they are using the same tactics of course.
