What does EVE require in the way of Bandwidth, would it be possible to connect over a very narrow connection (Modem / GPRS) if all I wanted to do was kick off some training and maybe do a few things in station (i.e. not undock). ___________________ Girlfriend's frying pan strikes you perfectly wrecking for 1072.4 damage. |

Last time I tried eve on an anorexic pipe (56k) it seemed playable, no more or less laggy than usual. This was around 6 months ago tho, so dont quote me.

Players have had no problems (barring large ops and Jita) on a 33.6 K modem.
If you want to play via a GPRS handset, you certainly can, however beaware that GPRS is deisgn for data intergrity not speed, Lag will be a problem.

I work away from home so during the week connect to EVE using my mobile phone connection, averaging a bandwidth of 57.6kbps. I find it more than adequate for my playstyle, even managing lvl 4 missions.
The main disadvantage is that there isn't a fantastic signal where I am so CTD's are more frequent. With this in mind, I tend to avoid doing missions during the week, concentrating on other aspects of play instead.
Lag seems to be no worse than my broadband connection ( upto 8MB)and is completely random!!

Up until recently I was playing on a modem as well. It works fairly well, but avoid high-traffic systems. I kept getting disconnected when operating in Jita (as in every 5 minutes). In less heavily traveled systems, the connection was more stable. I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing a lot of heavy fighting on the connection, but it should be adequate for relatively safe actions (such as trading and hauling in empire). -D |

I've been operating quite happily on 56k for over a year. The game is perfectly fine for 56k, if you're ratting or mining. I'd recommend a faster connection for operating in more populous areas though.

Edited by: Gonada on 26/10/2006 23:00:28 I wonder if in a world of high speed interent if it isnt you modem users that are the reason for so much lag in games.

56k that conects at 24.4k on average. I have no issues with lag other then loading the stations or at warp points.
I see using a lower speed conection as an advantage. When i enter a system, every else hates the lag. I'm use to it, and know there will be very few times someone will make me lag.
But, i still wish i had highspeed. Sometimes, you just can't get it. Both Cable and actuall satelite DSL are not available where i am.

Not possible for many people including at my own home. Sure I get insane bandwidth at my university, but I'm well out of range for ANY kind of broadband at home. Hopefully last mile techs like Broadband over Power Lines, WiMax, etc will be able to make this less of an issue in the near future. ----------------------------- EVE Addict, creator of the EVE Online Forms Greasemonkey Script \o/ |

I've played via GPRS. You manage to fly aswell, but not suggestable if its possible to get attacked. So skill changing works ok and chatting and handling the market.

Eve takes virtually no bandwidth.
I run MRTG on my router and I can see eve usage on it, but its very small and often web traffic covers eve up. (I am guessing that 56k is probably more than adequate for most eve playing, as people suggest)
