I recently upgraded my graphics card to a 9600 Pro, and since then have had lock-ups about every hour when playing. Yesterday I had to reset, and after that was unable to even get to the login screen.
I tried reinstalling drivers, directx, even installed eve to a different dir, all without any success.
I then read somewhere that using Windows 98 compatibility mode might work, so I tried that, and hey presto, it worked first time.
So if you have a similar problem give that a go! (if you're using XP that is. I think you can do it on Windows 2000 too.)

What version of Catalyst drivers are you using?

I'm using catalyst 3.8.
If you right click the shortcut, and pick properties, you should see a tab saying "campatibility", and it's on there.

Edited by: ZzeusS on 05/11/2003 17:52:53 Edited by: ZzeusS on 05/11/2003 17:52:08 How does it run in compatability mode? I have a 9700 pro and was having some 3.8 problems, so fell back to 3.7.. now I can't get past the splash screen either. Gets a black box then crashes (I assume can't init directx).. logwatcher doesn't really tell me a whole lot either.
Have you messed around with your agp apeture size in the bios? I tried 256, 128, 64 and 32, none would work.
Also, what would you say would be the best process for totally reinstalling Eve?
Load Catalyst drivers, DirectX, then install eve?
Directx, drivers, then eve? Or does it matter at all?
*edit*
The annoying thing is that it USED to run just fine. Audigy sound card with OEM CDrom drivers, 9700 pro with cat 3.8, Directx 9.0b.. no problems. Don't remember what happened but something screwed up and I decided to nuke the video drivers.. now it's not working at all with any combo.
I'm going to try adjusting apg apeture and flip on compat mode. C&C Generals runs just fine in AAx2 mode no matter what I do.. so the drivers are good.

To switch app to compatibility mode find eve.exe in Windows Explorer. Right click on it and choose Properties. Then click on compatibility tab and from drop down list box select system you want to make file compatibile with.
Some applications might require that you change compatibility to more than one file for example you will have to change all exe and dll files within app directory.

Two things with the 9600 Pro.
1) If you get random CTD e.g. after 1-5 minutes play but card otherwise seems to run normally, try increasing the voltage on the AGP slot by 0.1 or 0.2v. DirectX 9 games use more of the hardware on the card and so stress the power supply more - if the voltage is marginal then this can lead to crashouts. My system ran everything but DirectX9 games perfectly but bombed out on them in just this way - this fix cured it completely and I haven't had a single in-game crash since.
2) The one problem I do have is DDraw crashing on exiting Eve (e.g. on switching char) such that I can't restart it without rebooting. Workaround for this is to AltTab out of Eve, then shut Eve down from Windows rather than from inside Eve. Then it restarts without difficulty.

I see the Catalyst 3.9 drivers are out now, I wonder if they will solve some people's problems.

I spent a good 2 weeks trying to get my new msi/via motherboard and ati 9600 (not pro) working with windows 2000. After a couple days I got to the point where I could repeatedly get the monitor to turn on. Then about a couple more days later I could run EVE, but not for more than 30 minutes, I tried something about every night and finally got it so fragged i couldn't do anything. So I installed windows 98 and I was up and running flawlessly in about 1 hour, It was very bitter sweet I suppose. The odd thing is to this day if I screw in my sound card the monitor will not turn on. So I have my soundcard plugged in, but not screwed in, hey I'm lost as well but what the hell the only thing that computer does in run EVE... and ****o of course, works great for those 2 things now, except my 5 gig hardrive is getting to be not enough for eve. Even though EVE and ati drivers are pretty much the only things installed on that puter.
