This is a proposed solution for gate to gate travel instabookmarks, bookmarks for belts and safespots would remain.
I would like to see the ability to warp to a gate or station at reduced distances in a particular region tied to ingame items that you plug into each ship you maintain (basically another module but using specialised slots similar to ship rigs). Im going to call them 'Navigation logs' for lack of a better name, and these items should be able to be bought, sold traded or stolen and even destroyed by other players, just like every other regular item in the game.
Nav logs that allow you to warp with 10km - 5km (should be some sort of randomness) off a gate should initially be seeded on the market via NPC vendors for empire Regions (they should be cheap), however 'Platnuim" Nav logs that allow you to warp to 4-0km will be dropped from rats as loot (perhaps in place or alongside the regular logs that rats often drop in empire).
If you want to aquire a platnium Nav log for a particular empire region you need to either buy/trade for one, or go rat some logs for yourself in that region or ..... go kill someone that has one. Nav logs i think should be dropped as loot from player ships (with the chance of them being destroyed like any other item).
Each ship will be given a limited number of Nav slots (say 5 - 10, could depend also on ship class ?) that you can place the logs into, and will be swapped out via the ship fitting page, or via a ship fitting array at a POS like a regular ship module. (If you need to make a cross region eve trip that takes you through more than those regions you'll need to dock and refit :P). This gives you the ability also to fit nav logs to other ships you fly and would only require you to purchase more logs if you dont want the incovienience of swapping logs to other ships or if your logs are destroyed along with your ship.
Logs for 0.0 regions i think should not be obtainable initially from NPC vendors like in empire, but the regular logs should drop quite frequently in these regions in rat loot. The platnium logs should be more of a rarity but nothing that alliance members or visitors wouldn't obtain through regular ratting.
This of course gives equal chance that enemies of the alliance occupying a 0.0 region will get their hands on the same items (i know that this is a major concern for many alliances defending their space), however if an opponent is well organised they usually have a set of GTG bookmarks for the region they are invading anyhow, so there would be no more advantage gained than is already present already in game except the added bonus that you have the chance to destroy their ability to instajump until they get new logs after you pop them :D
If a system like this were to be put in place, i would hope CCP would not just yank Gate to Gate instas away from eve players straight away but instead give a transitional period where players can collect nav logs (esp the platnium ones) and start trading/looting and killing each other for them.
*As a side note it would also be good if an option could be worked into the evemap to highlight the regions your currently fitted nav logs cover
**Autopilot should still continue to warp in at 15 km as normal, Nav Logs should not be a way to make afk freighter trips faster :P
Anyhow theres my thoughts, pick it to pieces and/or make some suggestions and expand on the idea if its half decent.
