This post/topic merely reflects my personal impressions so please keep it constructive as i forgot my tech2 flamesuit at home . this is not in any way meant as attack on Tuxford who is doing a lot of, and mostly great work and i really do appreciate this.
the last few patches have been very much about 'balancing' the races and their respective modules and ships. Now one might think it is a good thing to ballance out races and remove 'I WIN buttons' from the game.
I started playing EVE in late 2003 and one of the things that impressed me the most actually was that you could one the one hand train whatever race you liked at any point in game therefore making your choice of race for your avatar a roleplaying or sympathy decission rather than a final decisssion on your path in the game. The races (as in modules and ships) were what now is called 'unbalanced' and what i would rathe like to call differing in their approaches to solve certain problems.
This has changed.
It was and still is tried to balance those ships and modules in a way that everyone is equally good at everything.
For example: it is tried to get all long range weapon and ammo types to do the same dps at roughly the same range to even out the odds.
Personally i do not like that. There should definitly be a difference in races and what they are good in. Currently there are only very few exeptions where this still is true (e.g. caldari in ECM and Gallente in drones).
Don't get me wrong please, i know that full stacking on damage mods was something that did not work out but on the other hand if i dedicate my skills as well as my fiting to dealing insane amounts of damage completly neglecting the possibility of tanking (aka tech2 gakageddon) i do not see anything wrong if this ship kills another ship of the same size in less than 30 seconds if you come within optimal. The sole reason of this ship is to be a killer in a limited range.
Now you can tell me that every race has a short range gank setup version of their own (blasterthron, autocannon tempest, torp raven) and that they differ in dmg output. well the whole idea of an MMORPG is that there are differences between the choices you make and once those get removed i don't need to make choices anymore.
For me this means: I am Amarr and i like to fly Amarr ships! I gladly accept the downsides (just EM and thermal dmg, guns eat cap, few med slots) and of course more gladly the advatages (no ammo needed, lots of low slots, reasonably good at short and long range).
This also leads me to the following fact: I do not understand why people won't see the simple truth of for example: if you get within optimal range of a ship, that is designed to kill a single opponent in the shortest possible time, and you can't run, tank or jamm it you will die. What is the use of training skills and fitting a ship to kill if the ship just won't do that anymore due to game mechanics?
So to sum up and get to a point: i am worried that balancing will ruin the game, at least for me.

For some reason, Ethidium Bromide creating a topic called "thoughts on balancing" strikes me immensely funny. I do still remember those drunken raids through Molden Heath old friend - bet you couldn't have WALKED straight.
Back on topic:
Yeah don't balance EVERYTHING, PAINFULLY. It's good to have a couple HARD ways and a couple EASY ways. --
