rigs are to ships as implants are to pilots
build from Salvaged equipment and devies
boost one aspect of ship at nerf to another when installed
can only be removed by repacking ship, this destroys the rigs.

They are something being added in Revelations. Each T1 ship bar the Freighters has 3 rig slots and each T2 ship has 2 rig slots they enable you to further customise your ships (with certain drawbacks) and they are lost if you repackage.

Its not an unbalance as long as the nerfs are pretty much in equal proportion to the beefs, so they encourage specialization (without adding 200 new ship types) and not just uber-mode. Same goes for boosters, tech 3, and basically all the other new stuff being proposed...it shouldnt be just a lame leveling system in the sense that someone who uses it will always outclass someone who doesnt.
