OK, I'm from the southwestern part of USA and know f-all about hockey. NFL sidelines strategy, connecting passes or fighting to pick u first downs, I know. But damn, after three winters of watching NHL hockey, so fast, so hard, so fun! B-Balll-- yeah, similar, with less psych game. Drawing fouls--- hell no, how aboot a fist to the head!
Futbol--- One the same tactical page. Take football/soccer and make it into mostly two-dimensions, in a tight space, on ice. Played by skaters with carbonite sticks chasing a little hard frozen black puck, precision flicking it around to teammates setting up plays, and rifling/stuffing it past the goalkeeper. who's probably a kung fu master at defending his not so big territory of net.
What an intense game. So far, no real show-bix showboating superstars in NHL. Just a lot of guys who look like they're one step from being booted and doing brake jobs at Dad's shop. Bless em, how straight up is that?
My advice to you: Do not ever look up "worst guitar solo" on Youtube. You will be sorry. No joke. Really and truly sorry.

Honestly, i never cared for it. Even though it is still reletavely "big" here. I find cars driving driving on an unknown road going fast ass speeds to the goal with only the guy next to you knowing what is going to happen next

more exiting than skijumping, not that it is a bad sport

I knew from a tender age I was different.
I was afraid of coming out
I dreaded not being part of the group
I loathed those meetings, when everybody was happy but me
I cried inside every single time people laughed at their "normal" behavior and customs that I never felt as mine
I was apart, but wanted to belong
I always saw them screaming in joy and happiness but never understood them
I tried to empathize when they felt bad and cried foul against fate, but felt nothing
And then, slowly but surely, people began to notice, they no longer invited me or talked to me, they knew I was different
They no longer looked at me with the common social cues of acceptance and head nods, I was just "that guy" now
Even today if I tell others my tendency , they look at me weird and feel uncomfortable
But I try to not let that bother me, I try to just go on and ignore people
I know I am not alone
I don-Št like sports, I never have, and know damn sure never will.

That Samsara kind of reminds me of Sankai Juku. If they were a lot more disturbing. If you watch one of their live performances for about 3 hours, you sort of forget where you are and what day it is. Actually, the performances could 30 minutes or 6 hours. You lose track.

Yea, I've been pleasantly surprised with the way the Caps have been handling the Rangers, would love to see Washington in an Eastern final. Sadly my boys in Montreal have been having a rough time, but playing well overall. Of course tonight's game just solidified that solid play, but a long way to go. Would love to see them make Habs history (coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs) but I felt from the onset of the playoffs that if TB met Montreal, it would probably be early to the links for the Canadiens. Damn Caps playing all too well. I fear for the Rangers. Canadiens and Lightning was a tight one too. Too close for bets. Man, such a great series. I regret so much time wasted watching bunk NFL. You non-hockey guys, Did You Know? The NHL has specific rules about Fighting. You have to take your gloves off (too much damage), but keep your helmet on (too much damage, but on the receiving end). No third-party guys joining the foit. Most fights occur because of ruff play, and trying to intimidate the other team. Therefore, teams put on Goons or Enforcers to counter-intimidate the other team. Their hockey skills might be crap, but they got size and aggression. It's a strategy call. Also, available only in North America. Apparently Euro countries don't allow this stuff.

If I like a sport, I do it. I don't get how people, who contribute nothing to the result of the game get a sense of satisfaction, victory or loss and refer to "us" and "we" when there is the most tenuous of geographical links. Such a waste of resources for people to sit on a sofa and have them gobble placebos with their eyes.

I for one don't waste my time watching sports. I play Eve or WoT while semi-watching them.
But seriously, I can see your point, especially about referring to a team as 'us' or 'we.' Animal behaviorist Desmond Morris theorizes that that's a modern substitute for the psychological need to be in a clan or tribe. Consider a chimpanzee. He lives in a troop (clan) of chimps. It's a distinct group, with a defined territory and rival troops that it constantly contends with. Desmond believes that homo sapiens lived the same way for 10s of thousands of years, before the development of agriculture and towns.
So, consider taking that chimpanzee and putting him in a house, with a chimp wife and chimp kids. Next door are other chimp families, but our chimp has no connection to them and barely knows them. Chimp no defined troop to belong to and defend anymore. Instead, he forms artificial troops in his mind. If there's a company picnic, and his office is playing a game of futbol or softball against another office of the company, he sides with his office against the rivals from the other office. His office becomes his temporary substitute troop.
Now, let's say that there's an inter-company futbol/softball league. Chimp's company has a team, and it includes people from his office and the other office. When the team plays against another company, Chimp sides with his with the company team-- it's his new artificial troop, even though it includes people that were members of a "rival troop" earlier.
Anyway, that's Desmond's explanation of why people become fanatics about sports teams in their geographical area. The team becomes a surrogate "troop" for them. Even though the fan doesn't personally know even one player on the team, the team has a distinct identity as a troop that carries on year after year. And it provides the essential component of "defending" or "aggressing" against rival troops (teams). So your diehard team supporter, who's socially isolated by the modern single-family lifestyle, is really finding a way to simulate the tradition of life in a clan or tribe. That's Desmond Morris's theory, at least.
Kind of sad and pathetic, if you look at it one way. Or kind of OK if you look at it another way.
Anyway, some of the placebos of TV sports are pretty good. Especially the commercials aimed at male viewers, featuring lovely hotties.

I have thought about the tribe thing. Wondered if we can build cities with cul-de-sacs where we have to meet out neighbours, government owned and then families can live in the exact same houses with their family on the same road or next road over. Might make for safer environments and happier people.

BTW, four teams left! Rangers v Lightning and Blackhawks v Ducks. I'm guessing Lightning and Blackhawks at the end. What do you say? Who are these Anaheim Ducks? I'm in East Coast USA, hardly see them play in this TV coverage zone.

I will stand by my earlier prediction of ducks vs rangers in the final. Tampa Bay is a bit of a wild card team in that they have the potential for an upset in the final. Anaheim is just too strong a team I feel, so the cup is likely to stay in the west again. |

Edit: As to the discussion on watching and not participating in sports. I'm canadian and grew up in a smalll community surrounded by many other small communities so hockey was and is what you did growing up. I played for 10 years until health problems forced me out. Watching hockey for me is as much about living vicariously through those im watching and simple entertainment. I've also got quite into the statistics side of things which can translate well into betting, which is also alot of fun. So it's two pronged entertainment for me. Sure it's silly to refer to your favorite team as us/we especially when that team isn't even local. But it's a community thing to. We, being the other fans, and "our guys" being the team we rally around.
Gotta agree that the Ducks look like a pain train at the moment. The best chance the east has is if the Hawks and Ducks beat the crap out of each other in a long and brutal series and one of the eastern teams comes out of the conference finals with a huge advantage in rest/preparedness.
It'll be hard to top Caps/Rangers in terms of excitement, though. Not a fan of either and I was still on the edge of my seat.

Yeah, Rangers/Capitals is going to be a great watch. Wtf is with that early start time though... 10am in my TZ is ridiculous. I usually wait till at least noon to start drinking |

Yeah, that last Rangers-Caps game was incredible. It would take a couple of more games to really see which of those teams are better. I'm betting on Blackhawks over Rangers and Ducks over Lightning as well. Lightning were impressive, but they seemed more about inspired play than consistent ability. But what do I know, it's my first year casually following NHL.

So far that assessment seems to be holding true, Rangers are most certainly being put through the ringer... the series seems to have devolved into a shooting gallery for both sides. High scoring games, a fair bit of sloppy play, with a few really beautiful plays thrown in to keep things interesting. I'm officially up in the air on the outcome of this one, it's truly anyone's series at this point. |

I would have guessed Ducks over Blackhawks too. In fact, I did and lost ISK. I'm going with Blackhawks over Lightning for the Cup though.

This Hawks/Bolts final has been a lot more exciting than I would have expected. Good response by the Bolts after the Hawks tied it 2-2 in the last game. That changed the face of the whole game 3, I think.

Fantastic series so far, solid gameplay from both sides. Rooting for Chicago I suppose, but would be neat to see Tampa take it, I guess there coach has a history of winning a championship in his second year with a team - this being his second year - so would be cool to see that history continue, though the EvE part of me wants to see him suffer defeat (I also dislike Tampa.) |

2-2 Both teams so good and so heartful, I hate to see either one lose. Glad it goes to 4 wins. Plenty of chances to see who's the better team.
