yeah take cruiser to V. Become an awesome cruiser pilot. Then move on to BC's and do the same thing there.
Nothing is worse in eve then being able to fly ships you cant really use. Using them and USING them are two different things.

I've got just under 5 mill SPs.
I cannot fire anything bigger than a small missile or a small turret. I cannot fly a cruiser.
However, I can fly my lovely Assault Frigate around, and the supporting skills are coming along nicely too.
Running straight for the top ships means you often won't have the skills to fit them properly. I don't think I could honestly say I was fitting my BS properly on my main until I was on around 18 mill SPs.
Plus AFs are much more fun to fly than a BC or BS, and there's much less of an ouch when they go pop compared to a HAC.

Interestingly enough, I chose battleship and went back to cruisers. I went straight for battleships because we didn't have battlecruisers back then. I really started to dislike battleships, eventually just self-destructing both the first bs I ever owned. When HACs came out, I went for those and never looked back.
Even with T2 bcs out, I prefer HACs. The Deimos is a nice little ship though it neerds (and is getting) some love. The Ishtar.. well, the ishtar just rocks at every single thing there is to rock at.
Nowadays though, I have the skills to effetively pilot battleships and I am starting to really love them. They're only good when you have good backup skills.

BSs are better then HACs in almost all situations. The only strong point HACs have over Battleships is their better agility and speed. In all other areas a BS is better (and cheaper - ).
Anybody believing in the HAC hype I would advise to check the Ships & Mods section of the forums and get some info on them.
So after cruiser I would recomend either BattleCruiser (very affordable) or BattleShip (reasonable pricing, powerfull).

BS's, of course, there was nothign else back then
I'd do the same again however, altho the new BC's do make a strong case for the BC class, BS's still outperform BC's at being the best general-purpose ship in Eve. Firzst you train tha twhich allows you to be self-suffiecient and perfomr multiple roles, then you traine that which gives you the biggest edge in your primary field of activity.
So, BS first, BC's/tech2 after that (assuming this is your first and main char).

Hey Man, depends on what you do in Game really,
If you're doing missions primarily, go Cruiser -> BC -> BS. This is just the way it goes, + I assume you don't have large amount of ISK, so BC will be more affordable for you. At the same time you can continue training supporting skills and have them at appropriate levels when you get the ISK to fly a BS.
If you're going PvP, again depends, mostly on the op, but I would recommend to do your particular ship class to the max, i.e. max out all skills for cruiser, maybe go into recon ships if that interests you. In either case you will have to train a lot of skills, and by that time you would probably have more idea what you would like to fly. The best way to know really is if you can afford the ISK to try the different ships out and see which you like best, find your own favorite!
Hope this helps m8!
Personally, i went Frig -> Cruiser -> BC -> industrial -> BS -> Assault frig -> HAC -> Command Ship -> Recon Ship, while at any time flying what the job required! In any case, it's nice to have versatility in the game in case you get bored ;)

I went like this, very very quickly (just a few weeks)
Frigate>>Industrial>>Destroyer>>Cruiser>>BC>>BS
Then I found myself on a BS with 75MM guns and 1 lousy light drone. Like the guys said above, flying a ship and piloting it are 2 different things. I went back to the frigate and properly trained supporting skills for the above ships.

I am a Battlecruiser man through and through when not flying my Bomber. I dislike how clunky and terribly immobile alot of BS can be, but find that Battlecruisers have a nice blend of firepower and a decent evel of manouevering for theirsize. Not to mention that the Ferox tanks like a beast.

I got BC and then BS asap. I was flying a BS at just a couple million SP (albeit badly), but I was able to pretty much snooze through L3 missions with it while my skills caught up so I could mount bigger guns/missles, followed by a T2 tank which gave me the ability to tank L4s for the $$ mission payouts. If you're going to mission run, get a BS ASAP since the payouts are pretty awesome running L4s, especially if you do them for low sec agents.
If you're going for straight PvP though, I'd recommend sticking to smaller, faster, and more disposable ships such as cruisers or frigs. Once you're sitting on decent engineering/electronics/navigation/gunnery skills, then it's safer to move on to the big ships with the big guns. BSes are a huge investment and therefore a huge risk to be putting on the line in PvP engagements, you'd be crazy to put that much ISK on the line in a ship that you're barely qualified to fly. Losing my T2 fitted raven is potentially around 300 mil down the drain, with only a 100 mil insurance reimbursement. I won't be putting that kind of ISK on the line until I'm sitting on a lot more SPs than I am now. Until then, I have a semi-cheaply fitted Scorpion which does the job at keeping me out of harm's way if I don't want to fight, and allows me to bring some pretty awesome EWar potential to the fight if I do.

I'd probably still do something similar if all those ships were available at the time anyway. Maybe go for Battlecruisers/Command Ships earlier or maybe not.

I'd reccomend either going directly for battleships or going to battlecruisers then battleships.
You should give yourself a good feel for each ship class before you really decide on what style of combat suits you.
Personally I went back to frigate flying and have been there ever since however there are plenty of people who enjoy sticking with battleships and everything else in between.
Early on finding out what you really enjoy flying is more important than being uber in somthing because another player told you to.

Fitted Industrials in there somewhere, I think between dessies and cruisers but not 100% sure. Think I might go AF or Inty next before progressing onto HACs or Battleships as I still need a lot of skills to be able to fly a BS properly and some of the reqs for T2 frigs will also be useful for flying a BS.

At 3.5 million skillpoints I went with Battlecruiser.
I already have battleship trained, but I would have had to wait about a month to buy one. But Caldari cruisers are just so **** fugly (except for the Blackbird, but it wasnt powerful enough for the missions I was running)...I couldnt stomach looking at my Moa for another month, so I canibalized all my cruisers and bought a Ferox. Even by Caldari standards, the Moa is Fugly.
If I had a choice (unlimited funds) I would have gone with a Battleship probably. I can get a Scorpion for about 50 Million, so I will probably be switching to that in a few weeks. But I do like the Ferox; just that the Scorpion looks cooler.
