So, here's the thing, I'm thinking about buying an Area-51 7500 computer from Alienware. I've never really had a computer that plays games well (the one I'm using now can only barely play EVE), so Alienware seems like the perfect choice now that I have enough money to spare.
So I'm sitting here day dreaming about all the gaming possibilities when it dawns on me that I don't actually know anyone with an Alienware computer so I havn't heard whether they're actually any good or not.
So, long story short. Does/Did anyone here own an Alienware computer and how is/was it (customer service, sturdiness, delivery times, etc)? I don't want to spend almost ú2000 on a computer that turns out to be pretty crappy. -------------------------

Question: Can you build computers?
If you say yes, then no. You can build a computer twice as good for half as much.
If you say no, then... if you're willing to pay that much, sure. Video games should be experienced completely. Of course, you could always go with Widow PC. Same great computers... less money into Dell's pockets.

No. Since Dell took over I'd stick well away. :)
Look at smaller OEM builders, they will often be better value for more buck and they tend to be nicer with support.

Alienware = more money for lots of shineys.
Cheaper and better off building one yourself. If you do, wait till the nVidia 8800 comes out (DirectX 10 card) and get yourself a shiney duel core processor of the Intel variety .
But to answer your questions, alienware customer service... frankly, i've seen better but they're ok. The machines themselves, well, they're not bad, but unless your going water cooling they're noisy as hell and the plastic case rattles alot. Delivery times, about a week.
Alienware your buying the brand, there really is no savings tbh with them, just extra cost. Dell XPS systems are shiney and are cheap. Not to mention well built aswell, so if you dont want to build your own, i'd recommend you get one of them. Dell customer support is fantastic, only had to call them regarding a change of shipping address but were still good. As far as how does it run? Well its quiet, fast, no problems. I still recommend you wait however till Janurary to take advantage of the new Technologies being released over the next few months, not to mention Vista

I can build PCs, but I can't build laptops... and as most of my gaming is on a laptop (keeps the peace if I can play sat next to my wife while she's watching telly ), would anyone recommend Alienware laptops? --

Alienware are over hyped. Better off building your own and purchasing an alienware case (that way the computer will actually be better and you still have quite a funky case) --------

An Alienware desktop is utterly pointless, because there are a thousand companies out there that will build you a desktop with custom parts for a small build fee, ranging from large online ones to small shacks on the edge of town.

sorry mate, like everyone has said, don't ouch their desktops unless you've got money to burn but I don't know diddly-squat about their laptops, they may be a good deal or they may not be. sorry

I have a 2000 pound alienware laptop, used it till the power cable got borked and alienware took to long to send me a new one
for the last year I have been using my 600 pound desktop with 100 quid in upgrades (gfx card). The alienware was used once when i went on holiday to a caravan.

ok two things:
a) the deliver times on the alienware machines really is out of this world! 2month + lead time!
b) if your looking for high end gaming products try www.beastcomputers.com they do some very nice machines.

If you're tempted to buy an alienware laptop, buy from another Clevo reseller such as Sager. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Alienware used to be good for gaming pc's but became a victim of their own succes tbh.
Ask in one shop, to design for you the perfect gaming machine at any cost. Go to the next shop, and ask for a 2nd price and opinion. Maybe buy it at a third shop, with all the arguments u've learned.
I'm running a 3yo machine, and can still play BF2. 2.8Ghz, 1 Gig Ram, radeon 9800pro. Costed me a left nut, but saved my right one having to buy a new one after 2 years.

Edited by: Epoch on 01/11/2006 00:38:40 like DaHeaVYFo said, alienwares USE to be fantastic. **** now. retarded turnaround times, terrible cs and now their association with dell. besides.. any pc manufacturer/builder that doesnt list detailed specs on the psus they put in their machines can gtfo.
theres gotta be a store similar to newegg for you guys in the uk. if you have a friend familiar with building machines.. ask for their assistance. tell them your budget.. what you want it for. watch em build it. building a pc isnt really hard.. just requires patience and research. its annoying as hell to find out after youve purchased components that there are compatability issues.

I'm currently waiting for an mALX. True I have been waiting for nearly 8 weeks now but unlike most other AW customers I don't spend 12 hours a day on the phone to customer service moaning at them, I accept that the problems are out of their hands and as I work for a small manufacturing company and have been in their shoes on more than one occasion.
The reason my laptop is going to be late is that they are having problems with their suppliers (the custom painted case mostly), but CS have been very good to me to be honest, regular email updates, phone calls from my CS agent etc to finalise things. I even got a discount on my order due to the delay. But I have heard of other people who have had a very bad experience with AW although these cases are in the minority they have been blown out of proportion due to the Dell involvement.
At the moment AW production is rammed, the 9700 and alx ranges pulled in much more business than they expected I think, so expect a longer than usual delivery time. |

If you are looking to spend a butt-load of cash on a laptop.. try Falcon Northwest (I think they do laptops).
Otherwise, stay away from Dell/Alienware... and go with a smaller OEM manufacturer.

Falcon Northwest = Shiny and overpriced. www.ibuypower.com - good deals on that website I would say.
