I had that problem with my SoundBlaster Live card a while ago with a different game (on XP). The one you get through the MS update site is fine, but if you go to the later one that you get via Creative the sound went all *****ly. As soon as I reverted to the earlier driver all the problems went away.

I had this problem with the Soundblast Audigy 2. I reinstalled the newest drivers and the problem went away. I think it has more to do with the directx drivers than anything else. Whenever a new version of Directx is installed, you should reinstall your video and audio drivers. I've learned this from experience.

Yeah I get the same problem from time to time. The only workaround I know is a reboot [my rig usually ctd's within an hour if I don't]. I use an Asus A78NX DLX REV 1.04 mobo, which incorporates nForce2 6 channel audio, judging by the posts here and the the varying sound cards it might actually be bug.

Tried to rollback to earlier version and it didn't work.. It's very annoying. I've tried with the Nvidias latest and the ASUS A7N8X drivers.. And nothing helps.. After 10-30mins the sound starts to *****le when it get's loud. When you have the music on or warping f.ex. It's driving me MAD.. It helps to exit eve to windows and logon again.. It MUST be a EVE Bug.. PLEASE someone HELP!!

Ultratech - this is a known bug with the nForce2 drivers. It apparently only happens if you're using the analog connections (not digital). It happens to me and to others that I know.
I got sick of it and downgraded to an SB Live!. The other proven way to fix it is to use Realtek's sound drivers instead of nVidia's... I forget the name of then unfortunately. It works because the nForce2 uses a Realtek DAC for the analog output. However, this option apparently downgrades the sound quality, and of course you lose the Soundstorm controls.
Check the forums at www.nforcershq.com and you'll find heaps of stuff about this issue.

I have this same problem. I am using an A7N8X and a Soundblaster Audigy. I have onboard audio disabled and use the digital output on the audigy, but I still get this same *****ling sound you mention after 20 minutes of play or so.

I had _ber sound problems using an MSI motherboard (VIA chipset) and AC97 onboard sound. This was not limited to EVE but any game that uses direct-x. I even splashed out on a super expensive (ú16) soundblaster 5.1 digital card from local pc fair. This made things worse for some games better for others. Anyway I tried about 10 diff mobo bios' 100 diff vga/sound/chipset drivers all with limited success or failure. This weekend windows2000 decided to die on me and rather than re-install it I thought I would give XP a whirl, just to see how bad it realy is. OK its a ****e OS and I mean ****e, but my sound problems have totaly gone, as has my station lag in eve. :-) Bugger got carried away and missed 5 mins of my lunch.... bbl
