Sure, it doesn't use Cedega. As the description says it uses Wine instead, which is the free project Cedega branched from ages ago.
I guess enough independent work and backporting achieved the same thing.

Sweeet :D
Alltho I'm not a great fan of ubuntu it never occurred to me that wine was still in active development. Always used winex/cedega and have not been able to make that work well since the beta...
# emerge --sync && emerge -av app-emulation/wine
In true gentoo style we will know if this works in about 24h or more, but if it does I can cancel my cedega subscription, thanks for the tip :D

Elfiger has also successfully had this running, but tbh getting EVE going under wine (at 0.9.24) does not work without massaging yet.
Cedega, while subscription based (meaning "not free as in beer") has been focusing on getting EVE running in co-ordination with CCP, so while I admire the efforts on the wine front, I am still supporting Transgaming. The biggest reason? CCP and Transgaming are actually talking and working together, and if that gets CCP more interested and inclined to support multiple platforms, then my little subscription fee to both does the end linux gamer a favor.
Linux has always been about openness and choice, and seeing wine getting closer and closer to version "1" and supporting a wider array of applications is a GREAT thing.
Having CCP working with a linux company which is also working on the CIDER wrapper tools to get MAC users into the fold as well is ALSO a good thing!

Drawn to the ideals of Linux though I am (I used it exclusively for three years at uni), gaming is the factor that keeps me in Windows.
Cedega has made leaps of progress over the years but it still fundamentally lags behind. It's unrealistic to expect a newly released game to work flawlessly within it, though this does sometimes happen, and the time taken to get to that stage oftens sees my interest in the game wane.
This is without the fun of DirectX 10, of course, which is going to need major work. I really don't see DX10 EVE working in Cedega, let alone Wine, for quite some time after its release.

I don't mean to be a smartass here, but you really need to look into things before making general assumptions.
This is snipped from the summary of WINECONF 2006. You need to take a gander because it makes your "major work" statement completely incorrect:
<snip> Direct3D10, which will ship with Windows Vista in a few months, doesn't seem to be a large cause for concern. At first glance it appears to be more of an evolutionary change rather than revolutionary. New shader support will be needed, but extending ours once OpenGL supports it should be pretty easy. Stefan mentioned Microsoft is currently offering a lot of incentives for Windows developers who develop D3D10-only games since they'll only be usable on Vista - there's no plan to backport D3D10 to XP. Dan Kegel asked if that means we should port Wine's forthcoming D3D10 implementation to Windows, which would be relatively easy when we switch to WGL.

I make a prediction based on past experience of Wine/Cedega's development rate and intimate knowledge of the differences between OpenGL (which Wine uses) and Direct3D, and the complexity of the translation, and you make one based on a PR statement?
Yup, I'm on really dodgy ground here.

Thx all! =D
Sevarus James: Well, i still wish for an native linux client. Like Neverwinter Nights. A compatibility layer is never as good as the real thing. And transgaming isn't all pie, you know?
Jarl Sigurd: I am a gentoo fanatic, too. I used it for my previous pcs and servers. =) This is my first Ubuntu installation ever. But so far i am really pleased with the system, it's nice that you can install it in 20 minutes, and everything (EVERYTHING) works. =D
I will write an Howto (in another tread) and post the link here.

I managed to get the cedega thing "working", however there are lots of issues with gfx bugs and lagg... First of all, I always see black gridlines when in space, and something seems to be fked up with input handling as it does not seem to read input for like 5 seconds, then works for a second, back to 5 sec sleep (VERY annoying) Guess I'll give wine a go since I haven't seen anyone else mention those problems with it. (the problems with cedega only appears in eve)

Yep, you are. That wasn't a PR release, they were notes from the developers DISCUSSING the issues...not some marketing flack.
Also, regarding the speed of development, in the last several months, google has stepped aboard the wine 'train' and as a part of the google picassa project jumpstarted wine development.

No disagreement from me here. I too would LOVE a native client. As CCP has basically indicated that they aren't at this point, I prefer to be practical about it. Transgaming may not be perfect, but for EVE, I have no complaints.

the transgaming forum has quite a few potential fixes for your described issues. You are using an ATI card I'm guessing, and a lot of those issues stem directly from the ATI drivers. Our thread in the tech forum also has some good info on how to resolve these issues.
