How does mining rare ore compare to mining rare ice in terms of profit and time?
e.g. Spodumain vs Gelidus

Time... 1 unit of ice every 10 minutes (not including skills). If you can get someone to buy your ice on a contract basis, it'snot bad. As for selling it on the open market... You're going to be in a Mining Barge running strip miners or ice harvesters.
I'd go with the rare ores unless I needed the POS fuels.

as spodumain sucks you will make more with the ice but if you get real rares like bistot, crokite or arkanor you go beter with rares.

what if you are in high sec i.e. > .5. Which would be better?

If in high sec you have resonable ice mining skills and a mackinaw at about level 4 exhumers you WILL make more profit mining ice than mining ore. HOWEVER, you will need to have sell orders or find really high priced buy orders to make real money from it and that generally means moving the refined materials from the ice to another region.

Ok that's good to know.
Unfortunately, with my current skills I will be able to field a retriever in a few days.
So, based on that information I take it that I should stick to ore until I can get exhumers (another month away).

That and you need to start scouting out the best prices for what materials you get from your Ice ore. You might also be wise to consider doing some missions to raise your corp standing with the station that you do your refining at.
