Currently we got a item exchange, courier, auction. I would like to propose a new option called Rental.
The way it works is:
1. A person puts up a contract to rent something out (Example: Fitted Procurer) 2. They set the rate - Isk per mins/hours/days (Example: 1mil per day) 3. Collateral (Example: 25mil) 4. Max duration in days 5. Contract availability in days
This would allow corporation to put up ships for rent, so members (or even public), can borrow ships. This would also means the ships can be secured based on collateral. |

Fairly reasonable. Probably some issues to iron out in the details but the basic idea of renting out an item for a fee sounds interesting enough and not particularly abuseable. Possibly add a warning when setting the collateral if it's lower than market value of the ship (still plenty of room for 'fun' mistakes, since we already have warnings like that on the Market and look what people do there...) |

so what about ship destruction? how about trading off the rented ship? how about the price gouging for rented ships or enormous collateral placed on rented ship, which results in gankers openly baiting players and end up coughing up 10 times the value of the rented ship? Or what about renters renting ships and scattering them to furthest corners of new eden?

Already existed. It was called a "Loan Contract" and they worked almost exactly the way you describe (put down collateral, get item for certain period of days).
It was removed because...
- it was rarely used for it's intended purpose (after all... why put down collateral and "rent" when you can just sell/use the collateral and buy what you want? You can sell it afterwards.)
- when it was used, it was used to scam
How did you start?

- when it was used, it was used to scam exactly, there is literally no benefit, and all the risk, to placing the collateral below hull value, and placing it at or above hull value means your better off buying it yourself.
Theres really no point to renting in EVE, kinda like theres little point in outsourcing services, EVE just doesnt run like real life. |

The collateral would need to be equal to the value of the ship and fittings or nobody would want to rent, if you had enough collateral to rent a ship why wouldn't you just buy it instead?
Maybe it could work for pos and poco's where an alliance would set up, own, and defend the structure then rent it out but not ships and modules. |

the reason you would want to rent ships out is because sometimes the ship is not available at the location. |

Was it during the Escrow system? THAT THING WAS GLORIOUS.
But yes, purchasing spaceship -> Selling later is going to cost less than the rental rate. Altho, it could work just as Rialen describes for corporate use.
