So I've been pirating a bit around Ane/Seyllin in me trusty Caracal, killing stuff here and there. Got some profit too, but mostly it's been meat for my ever lower security
Anyway, today I was looking for a kill as I just had equipped my shiny new Caracal, and I spot a Brutix on scanner, ratting in a belt.
Oooh, a shiny Brutix... But can my Caracal handle it? After seeing theres no way I can get any backup I decide its a lost cause, but then it hits me; If he's ratting, is he using railguns, and will they be able to hit me if I'm close enough?
So after a quick decision I decide to test my luck with my poorly fitted paper-ship. I land 6k away from him, and suddenly find myself pounding at his hull with missiles. The webber and scrambler ensures he wont get away, and I see piles of lovely messages stating he cant hit me
I merrily take out his drones, but then realises that this guy is a newbie, and wont net me good iskies. Now what was this nearly exitinct method of pirating, ransom you say? Shouldnt hurt...
I open a conversation with him and state that I want 5 mills and he's free (7 mill for insurance and some random amount of isk for t1 mediocre t1 gear, 5 mills seemed reasonable). He agrees on my terms :D
I stop firing and keep orbiting him. He takes his time. Reinforcements? I figure I'll wait just a little more... Then I glance at my modules and to my horror I notice I let the ab run along with all the other stuff, and I'm nearly drained of cap.
I frantically disable all non-essential mods and quickly write in convo "hurry please"
Still nothing. GAWD ****IT! As I'm just about to start killing the nubbin. I remember something I read on the forums about seconds. Might work me thinks, and writes "5 seconds" in chat. I wait one second and write 4
Then I see the wallet blinking. In a near panick I hit the warp button in case of reinforsements, and manages to close the window. I thank him for doing business with me in local and continues down my valued pirate road
BTW. 5 mill is alot to me, I'm a nubbin too
YARR!

I wish more pirates ransomed instead of just blowing you away. I don't think a lot of pirates consider how willing most people are to fork over the quick cash to save them from having to get another ship and refit it. That time has a value and that's part of what converts into the value of the ransom (beside module costs.)
Considering what most surviving loot modules/cargo are worth in resale the ransom is the way to fat pockets IMO. Plus if I know a pirate or corp is reputable and honorable and holds himself to the ransom, I know that giving up my money is worth it and he's not just going to blow me up anyway. So I'm more willing to pay than hold out and go down with the ship. ________________________________________________________________________________ "My once immaculate white pants are now stained from the weak and innocent. I agree with my esteemed friend Redpants. I love it when pirates ransom, it means quick cash for you, and saves a ton of time for me. By the time you are doing hauling runs outside of empire, 5m is pretty affordable.
And look at it this way. If I know you will ransom, I can pretty much factor in the occasional ransom as part of the code of doing business in that area.
Which means you can ransom me over and over again any time you can chase me down :)
A couple of kills and I might be encouraged to go elsewhere and let someone else ransom me.
So it's in both out best interests to ransom.
Also, nice reasoning with the rat == rail == GO FOR IT! :)

Not all pirates are honerable, which is why i dont trust any of them to keep their word. You just cant trust anyone in this game, if you do you run the risk of getting stung.
So in short I will never pay a ransom ______
