Hi all.
Just a quick question. Actually it's what the title implies. Can one make a viable "living" trading minerals with a freighter? I have an account that I intended to use as a trader/industrialist, about 17m sp, including Amarr freighter. I have not yet perchased a freighter and want to make sure that it will eventually pay for itself (with profit of course). I am just looking for something to get me away from mission running with this character for a bit.
Anyway my plan was to transport minerals from region to region and thought maybe some of the seasoned traders on this board could could lend some experience. Not looking for your personal experiences, just your opinion on mineral trading on the whole.
FWIW I thought mineral trading would be easier than researching a host of T1 mods to ship region to region. But then I suppose if it were easier everyone would do it. :)
Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried trading minerals myself, but i think it can be viable. You'll have to react quickly though as you probably won't be the only one playing the market :P

Well I just threw 2.5b into the mineral market as a test to see if I can make some waves. If successful, it will be profitable for a lot of people, but should be interesting. Personally, I think it wouldnt make much more than a ripple, but fun nonetheless.

I have recently gotten myself into the minerals trade. I have found it quite profitable. With low end minerals there is not that big of a price difference between regions. With high end minerals the volumes aren't normally big enough to need a freighter. Where I have found that a freighter would be helpful is in moving low end minerals around within a region, but I don't know if there is enough money in it to justify the cost of the freighter.
I expect that a freighter would be most profitable to operate with a production enterprise more so than a pure trade endevour. You could use it to collect up you materials over a couple of jumps and to redistribute the final product.

Know where the buyers and sellers are that don't make their own orders. I do a decent business buying and selling minerals at the same station, not even a trade-hub system.

It is quite a viable option. Back when I started EVE and got a Badger, I use to make a killing (for a newbie) trading minerals. I'd pack my hold full in some region where I could get the minerals very cheaply (in comparison) then run them up to a high demand system.
I eventually got into running them out of lowsec, though that was rather dangerous, and I did loose several badgers full of minerals, though I made enough to make it worthwhile at the time.
My personal favourite for such things was Mexalon, depending on the area if your hauling it out of lowsec you can some times buy it as cheap as 4 ISK/U and sell as high as 12-15 ISK/U
If your going to go that route though (runnin minerals out of lowsec) wait at least a few hours minimum (my own preference was acutally usually several days) before doing the pickup as more often than not the really cheap minerals were just put there as bait by the local pirates. By waiting a while I ran into alot less camps on the way back, due to the fact that they didnt know when to expect me.
However, even in Empire it's often quite possible to manage, though your proffit margins wont usually be quite as big.

Thanks for the replies. I crunched some numbers and it seems I can make it work. Also may cart some other things around. :)

I'll say a big agreement, especially on the mex.
Now that my latest mex op just finished, let me give you an example.
When the mex price spiked recently, Aridia didn't follow fast enough. So it was selling for about 6 isk, and Jita buying at 14 isk.
So I jumped into Aridia, and bought about 80 million units of mex at prices ranging from about 4-8 isk.
Used my trust badger to collect the smaller piles into bigger piles, and a couple of strategic freighter runs to get it out.
Less than a months work, 350million isk invested, about 1 billion isk profit.
Which may not be a lot to some here, but I only have 2.5 million skill points, so it's a hell of a lot of cash for me. :) |

Noc is another good mineral for that sort of thing. And at lesser times Zyd and Mega can be a good source too. Though you need alot more capital to make that truely viable.
You can make a fair bit off doing the same with Trit and Pyrite but the margins are so low it's not usually worth it.
