I am about to start lvl 4 missions, and I know that it would be easier in a Raven, but I am a stubborn minmatar, so after a setup for running missions.
I prefer the Phhon over the Pest, but will take any suggestions
Thanks

Phoon for armor tanking (e.g. Sansha), Tempest for shield tanking (Angels). I use Arties and 3 T2 gyrostabilizers on the Tempest and have recently switched to 1200mm from 1400mm (less reloading, more AFK ;-) and nearly the same DPS with much better fitting). The Phoon is best with Torps and medium Arties or large ACs (if you want to waste a lot of cargo space for ammo) and of course, heavy drones. Always fit an Afterburner.
PS. Ravens suck, unless you have a lot of faction gear and T2 cruise/torp skills.

  ..are you sure on that?
I hear the pest has alot of trouble for lvl4, phoon has mixed reviews, i would hold out for the pwn cannon maelstrom :D

It takes about 34 days to get a new pilot into a raven - being able to do most missions. And no thats not with any faction gear or anything, its your standard t1/t2 mixed fitting. Im not saying it will solo everything especially not if you dont know what theyre about.
Then again note that im certainly not piloting one and that anyone flying anything matar is in much better grace then your raven pilot in my eyes.

I have only run lvl4 missions against angels and amarr. And here you want to stay more than 60km away - then you will practically never get hit - at least not by guns. Which is why i use a tempest fitted with 1400mm (tech II's if you can use them) and cruise launchers. Add a light shield tank and a AB and you should be alright - just keep more than 60km away and shoot any web/scrambler first.

Edited by: Trojanman190 on 08/11/2006 14:00:57 Phoon owns the tempest at missions. I flew a tempest for ages with both arty and ac and I even had faction equipment. It did its job and kicked ass, but just wasnt as fast or as easy to use as the phoon.
For Guristas, and Sanchas
4x Arby Siege 3x Heavy Diminishing Nos 1x Tractor Beam [just there cuz i cant fit anything else, i still use looting ship]
2x Best named Painters 2x Eutectic Cap Rechargers [guristas do not like to hang around in nos range, but when they do it can save you]
1x LAR II 4x Hardeners [Guristas: 3x Kinetic, 1x Thermal, Sanchas: 2x EM, 2x Thermal. The Extra em may be over kill so feel free to drop it in favor of whatever else you may want.] 2x BCU II
6x Heavy Drones 5x Light Drones
I used to use 5 heavy and 5 med, but light t2 drones are wonderfully cheap and seem to do the anti frig job a lot better than medium drones.
The trick with this phoon setup is target choice. The siege should always be on a battleship and that battleship should have only one painter on it [yes some battleships have a sig radius low enough to need painting.] The other painter should go on the cruiser that your heavy drones are hitting. DO NOT send your heavies on battlecruisers while there are basic cruisers around. Double painting a battlecruiser will allow you to kill it with 2 volleys of your torps. This saves a buncha time. Obviously frigates are for your light drones.
I can solo all guristas level 4s with this setup as well as all blood raider / sanchas missions. Only missions phoon is not ideal for are wierd drone agro missions like enemies abound. For Angels it is entirely possible to use a shield tanked phoon. The tempest might be a little better but here is a setup I find works.
4x Heavy Diminishing Nos 4x Arby Siege
1x XLarge Booster 3x Hardeners [Explosive, Thermal, Multispec]
5x PDS II 2x BCU II
6x Heavy Drones 5x Light Drones
The above setup works for anything except angel extrav, which I have not done lately because of crud bounty and drops. Its just not worth the time it takes to do the mission. Even for a raven.
The thing with a phoon is it can pretend to be a raven and actually does better in some areas. It can run its tank for longer, dish out more anti battlship damage, and can use its drones to destroy cruisers faster. Most raven pilots are stuck with only medium drones, which arent bad but arent amazing at killing ships bigger than cruisers and arent amazing at killing ships smaller than cruisers. If you time your torps right you should never be firing them at a target that they wouldnt do max damage to. Very very rarely have I had to double paint a cruiser and hit it with torps. VERY very rarely.
I tried the whole turret thing and replaced the nos and tractor beams with 800mm but it just was not worth it. YOu lose an important part of your tank for a very small damage increase on targets that just happen to fall into your firing range and arent moving to fast. They just arent worth it.
Hope this helps. I love my phoon. Fantastic deadspace battleship. When Kali hits I will be using hte maelstrom for encounters =) It can fit a full 1400mm rack o.0

A lot of Tech 2 gear in the set ups...how about someone new to the Battleship...I was exclusive to cruisers and battle cruisers....only decided to go BS yesterday. Starting L4 missions. So how about a set up for the new kid on the block..with more base BS skills?
