Imagine building a brand spankin' new computer for playing Eve. What would yours look like?
Right now I plan to build a new computer in the next few weeks. Components I am thinking about: Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe, ASUS P5W DH DELUXE, EVGA E-GEFORCE 8800 GTS.
Suggestions appreciated.

I was thinking along these lines...
AMD X2 AM2 4200+ (CPU) GB m57sli-s4 (Motherboard) OCZ Technology OCZ2G8002GK (Ram, 2*1Gig sticks) Western Digital WD3200KS 320gb (HDD*2) Samsung 940B Black 19" LCD (LCD Monitor, duh Razz) Antec PLUSVIEW-II (Case) XFX PV-T73G-UGF3 (Graphics Card) Antec SP-500 (Power Supply) Logitech G15 (Keyboard) Pioneer 111DBK (CD/DVD Burner) Floppy Drive (Oh uh... I forgot ) Plantronics AUDIO360 (Headphones) Zalman CNPS9700LED (CPU Heatsink/Fan/Whatever you want to call it)
Only thing that isn't listed is a mouse... As nobody listed any 5+button mouses with the Side buttons on either side of the mouse, which is a must for me as I really like my FPS games.
Planned upgrades for the machine in the new year
Another 2Gig of RAM, Another 2*320GB HDD, Plus the Geforce 8800GTX (DirectX 10 Vid Card, wheee), then a second GF8800GTX for awesome SLi-ness
All up, that's an extra $2000-ish (Man, I could build another one of the above computers for that )
Oh, and after that comes the Water Cooling, God knows I'll need it with the Overclocking that thing will be able to do )

I have just built this system for myself.
Windows XP 64 AMD AM2 X2 4200 65w low power version (now at 2.8GHz on stock voltage) Asus M2N32-SLi Delux Wireless Motherboard (includes built-in 802.11g wireless) 3GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 (2x 512 and 2x 1024) 5-5-5-12 timings @ 1.9v 1TB Seagate HDD's (2x 500GB) One for OS & apps, one for video & music X1900GT ATi card, core +20MHz, Ram +60MHz (waiting till DX10 comes out to buy a top end card) Zalman CNPS9700LED (My god, this thing keeps the CPU at 32C at stock settings and 100% load, 44C with my overclock) BenQ 1655 16x DVDRW Plextor PX-716A 16x DVDRW 19" BenQ TFT 19" Widescreen cheap ú100 TFT (much better than my ú800 2 year old one) Logitech track ball Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard (nothing like setting up a 1 button fire all weapons function, just need support from eve & ccp to show stats on the LCD from in-game)
Not quite my ideal setup but for under ú1000 its a very nice cheap system.
Ideal setup would be an Intel Core 2 Quad, overclocked to atleast 3.6GHz with chilled liquid cooling (will need it as that chip is a power monster) DX10 graphics card 4GB Ram 2x Raptor drives Raid 0 and 2x 750GB in raid 1 for data storage and backup Oh a nice 42" Plasma TV to play eve on would top it off nicely.
Oh, the DX10 eve client and a copy of Vista 64 would be the icing on the cake. ----

Shame some people have yet to connect them.

My Shuttle SN25P with Athlon64 X2 4200+, 2GB RAM and an ATi X1800XT does 200fps when I'm in station.. anything faster than 60fps is just a waste but I can't turn on any more fancy options. This computer isn't brand new either.

First, read this link on eve becoming unplayable
Then, find your old Commodore64 or Zinclair ZX81, and enjoy "Shamus" again. Runs fine :) -- "Fear accompanies the possibility of death, calm sheperds its certainty." |

Yeah, Zalman's are very nice and very quiet... That's why I like 'em :)

Honestly, I'd go a Samsung over a BenQ, for one reason really... Warrinty. Samsung are, by far, the best when it comes to replacing LCD monitors through their warrinty.
They'll even replace your monitor if you get 1 single dead-pixel.

Heh, I'm steering clear of Vista64 for now. It has a HUGE hardware issue with anything that uses USB. After 5-10 mins, your machine slows to that of a 386... I just hope they fix it when Vista gets released, otherwise it'll be a huge waste of money for me as alot of my peripherals are USB (Coffee Jug, Heated MousePad, USB Missile Launcher, 200GB External HHD)

Don't use a 64bit version of windows for gaming. Stick to 32bit (even when Vista arrives).
Great system would be a little upgrade from my recent bought system: Intel E6600 2GB RAM 7900GT
The upgrade would be another 2GB RAM (just in case) and 2x 8800GT(x) non-SLI configured. That way you should be able to run the DX10 Eve in dual screen setup without much of a framedrop because of the dual screen (hook up 1 screen to each gfx card). While we're upgrading, put in the newest model CPU also :p

Why???
I have 0 problems with XP64 on my PC and on some programs I get a FPS boost due to the 64bit drivers, infact I have less problems with XP64 than I did with XP32. All my devices are supported and if I do a memory upgrade it will allow me to use it all (XP32 only sees 3.5GB max on a home PC due to bios and PCI limitations 4GB is the maximum size 32 bit CPU's can address. yes there is physical address extensions to support 16GB but that really slows windows down, infact some systems only see 2.5GB when populated with 4GB or more)
I actually forsee 64 bit OS's being the norm very quickly with games eating up more and more ram, it may also be that Microsoft wont let you choose the version of vista that gets installed as they said they will be supplying both on one disc with an auto install. ----

Memory prices have been fairly constant over the last two years... if memory prices fall some more, and you start seeing systems come with 4-6 GB of ram.. then 64 bit vista will make sense. It may be another year or two before gamers start bothering with 4gb, and will most likely be 4 years before average people even think about 4+ gb of ram... but eventually it will come, and 64 bit will be the standard.

For one, the official Vista 64bit will only accept signed drivers. You could fool the beta/RC into accepting non-signed drivers so far, but MS is making sure it can't be done with RTM. This means that there's a lot of drivers that just won't be available for the OS, thus you could have a half working computer.
Since you do know something about pc's, that shouldn't be a real problem, my advice was only for those who are less blessed with PC-knowledge.

Just built this one about 3 days ago :D
-Core 2 Duo E6600 -Asus p5n -1 gig DDR2 PC6400 @800 (upgrading to 3 gigs in feb) -7950GT 512mb -320gb @ 7200rpm -Coolermaster liquid cooling -G15 keyboard / G5 mouse -20" Samsung 6ms -XP X64 (which, btw, works wonders for gaming after all drivers are fitted).
Eats absolutely EVERYTHING I throw at it - runs EVE at ~200fps in station, runs oblivion at about 65fps constant (drops to 40 with alot on screen, but jumps back up quickly), absolutely no problem running F.E.A.R. or HL2 either. Great system, and cost me $1450 =]
