I've been using sound built into my motherboard for my past to upgrades (4 years in total) But was thinking of getting X-fi and some 5.1 headphones. I here good and bad things about the X-fi.
Any suggestions on sound and headphones?
What sound card do you use?

I use an E-MU 1820 Audio I/O interface. Being a musician, I need the great D/A it has.
If you're doing regular consumer stuff - like listening to music and playing games, the X-Fi will be just fine. I used an Audigy 2 Platinum for years. Creative's stuff is fine for the normal consumer.

I recently bought an audigy 2 and some sennheisers for my laptop. Music hasn't been the same since. I'm thinking of buying an audigy 4 for my desktop now.

I also have a pair of Sennheiser H280's (think that's the model number - I'm at work now). Not nearly as comfortable, but the frequency response more flat - which is a good thing, especially for those of us who make music.
*EDIT* This is Captain Ruin. Crazy alt.

All depends on you're budget really for the OP. For $30 the Audigy 2 Value from Creative is a hell of a deal, and if you feel like plunking out the cash for an X-Fi for gaming you wont feel disappointed.
The headphones are harder, the 5.1 headphones is a pretty new developement, and really everyone "hears" them very differently. You might just have to buy and return a few pairs before you find the models you like.

Edited by: Twilight Moon on 10/11/2006 13:36:45 Edited by: Twilight Moon on 10/11/2006 13:36:19 Have an Audigy LS at the minute, and while it is marginally better than the on-board sound, it has no front panel break-out box, and therefore I usually have to get into rather intimate positions with my PC, under the table when I want to change from speakers to headset (usually at night when the neighbors don't seem to appreciate the sound of all out war coming from my house. )
Anyway, to rectify this, I've just ordered a Creative X-Fi with a front breakout box, so hopefully it'll give a nice improvement in clarity. For headphones I use the Speedlink Medusa 5.1's....but they're rather weak on the bass side of things. I'd only recommend them if you really want 5.1 in a headset.
Zalman does a set of 5.1 Headset's too, but avoid them, I had a pair, and it broke within a month. Really poor build quality and the sound is rather weak too.

im using an audigy2SE and 5.1 surround system for my game sounds, and the onboard for TS and vent + headset, works perfectly, and in adition with a few clicks i can switch them around so i never have to unplug the headset.

Glad to see I'm not the only one in Eve. I tried the 2496 as well, before aquiring my 1820. I was getting unbearable clicks and pops, and a strange level of static as well. Not necessarily an issue from the 2496, as I tried 2 different external Firewire interfaces (Firebox and Saffire), both of which had the same problem. I'm very happy with my 1820, even if it was 3 times the cost of my intended purchase. - just a matter of finding the right gear for the right configuration.

I actually need a sound card, but don't really feel like buying an expensive one.
I have sound turned off in EVE, because if there are drones in space their noises + the guns = super lag on my side. My sound actually lags me in BF2 as well.
Does anyone know if those $25 cards from Walmart will fix it? I think they are Soundblaster. --------

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 11/11/2006 13:00:46 I have a Sennheiser HD 600, I tried both the 650 and 600 but the 650 didn't really give me any improvement, certainly not when you compare both prices.
It's great tho but I don't use it for my computer. Soundcards in computers are cool for games and all that but they're not Hifi, no matter how much marketing you throw at it.

So, who cares? With an Audigy 4 card and a nice rack of speakers, it's still impossible to hear a difference in quality if you're not a hardcore studio-musician, in which case you shouldn't have equipment for less than 10,000 bucks..
I nothing else, I recommend getting the KOSS Pro4AA Titanium. They're cheap now and also The best headphones for any musician playing games
