Is it just me or does anyone else think the amount of pirates in EVE is rediculous? I'm not counting the npc pirates, just players. In rl the "normal" population is bigger than the criminal population because crime has consequences. But in EVE...on the forums most posts seem to be about pirating, even telling new players to do it. Ingame in the chat channels (even Brutor Tribe chat) people talk about their pirating.
It's all i ever hear. Pirate this, pirate that, blah blah...
Is corp pvp so bad that players have to resort to pirating to enjoy pvp in EVE, or is pirating so profitable that it's just the more common choice?
When i started EVE i thought the main point was to build an empire...but now it just seems to be to kill other characters

People talk about pirate because people like to PvP, and pirate is a way to achieve. If they want so, cool, its a way to play the game, plenty of ways to do it and avoid it.
If you seem interested in building an empire (Mega Corporation mate?), go right ahead, just because of other's tastes doesnt mean it should influence yours :)
And yes, there is plenty of PvP pirating. Wars, Fleets, Gangs, bla...

I'm not saying there shouldn't be pirates, and i never let anyone influence my playstle
I just thought that the majority of pvp would be corp related, but all i ever hear about is pirating.

Hey. Well EVE is a very PvP oriented game. But not all of the people out there are not necessarily pirates. Think of it, if people really are all pirates, do you think they would waste time advertising in the forums?
I think the fact that they are advertising means that they are not that much popular to the masses. There are a number of anti-pirate corps out there and most corps usually reject members with very low sec standings (except the pirate corps).

The point of eve is the Corporations have taken over. Let's look at our society how many politicians have been bought out. You tell me a corporation has never broken the rules or hired an unsavory element to "make an offer he couldn't refuse". Pirate our our criminals. In every city out there there is an underbelly that most people avoid, same here learn to use your map and stay away from them till you are ready to play.
Besides Pirates provide a very important service to the Community. They Blow stuff up!!! What do you thing minerals would be worth if nothing ever got destroyed. They are vital to the economics. They also pay huge amounts of money for modules and ships being banned from Empire. They themselves fight each other as well as pirate hunters. It maybe fun to be a pirate but it is also hard in it's own way. Their are other economic considerations that the pirate element supports, like players getting paid to transport stuff.
Note: I can not say I love Pirates, I have been killed and I have killed a few in my time but I understand their position in EVE. They make the move to 0.0 interesting. What would it mean if we all just got along.... Well that will be a bloody boring day.

Corporations and Alliances (for the most part) talk about PvP on their own forums. Pirates (and especially the victims of piracy) usually don't share a common forum, so they talk about it here. _

QFT. Pirates do more for the game.
Edit: Oh and btw, there are thousands of players that take part in the fleet fight blobs and POS warfare in 0.0 alliances, you seem to be ruling them out.

There is a lot of talk about piracy because it seems everyone in their EVE career picks it up at one point, out of sheer boredom/interest. Then when they make their first BS kill or whatever they come to the forums to post about it.
These people usually don't last 2 weeks, they always seem to drop out of the piracy game and go on to do something else. Piracy is a phase to most, and a proffesion to only a select few.

That depends on what you define as pirating...
If it is shooting according to the NBSI rule, then just about everyone in game is guilty of that.
If it is ransoming, then not many (percentage wise) do that.
I consider myself anti-pirate but, I play by the following rules:
- If I'm with a hunting party, then I will shoot anyone that is not at positive standing to me (with my personal exception to shuttles, noob ships, and industry)
- If at war, I will then shoot at industrial, shuttle, and noob ships when directed by the gang leader.
- If not at war, I will not shoot at neutrals unless they have shot at one of my buddies, corp mates, or me first.
Now, on the reason pirating is so prevalent, I believe the following plays a part:
-ItĘs a whole lot easier to be a pirate than not. Why? a.You can shoot at any target you want. b.You will have more targets: noobs, neutrals, shuttles, industrials. c.You donĘt have to travel as far to find a confirmed target. You can find the nearest system with people in it and shoot at anyone that is not positive standing. d.Part of your ego is comprised of the number of killmails you obtain (though, this is not exclusive to pirates). e.A lot of people get off on ruining another personĘs day. But that is both the receiver and delivererĘs fault. (both parties make a choice on their own action/reaction). f.EvE makes it easy by allowing disputably simple ways (sniping, tanking, T2 ammo, etc.) to bypass designated security (sentries, concord, etc.) g.Negative status means nothing because one way it can be worked around is through alts. h.Concord is less like police and more like roaming sentries in that, committing a criminal act means losing a ship and no more. The perpetrator can leave in a shuttle and return to gank again (no jail time, fines, execution, etc.). i.IĘm sure thereĘs more but, I have yet to think of them.
The other dilemma isą who is deemed as a pirate is a matter of perception. When I go and raid an enemy who is ratting he would probably tell you that IĘm a pirate. If you asked me, I would tell you that IĘm the exploited underdog trying to free others and myself from the powerhouse overlord who seeks to rule all with a tyrannical dictatorial rule.
