i've been playing eve for a while on a very new notebook that obviously has decent cards and such to support eve. i don't know much about this technical stuff so i've got a question about the quality of graphics cards.
what i'm doing is taking my old (well 2002 model) desktop and for the shear fun of it (and another puter to play eve on), upgrading everything. it originally had 256k ram, so i put an extra gig of ram in. of course that made the comp so much quicker, but eve was still lagging with sound disabled. so i'm entering the world of shopping for a new graphics card i did some digging and found that my desktop has an nvidia geforce mx400 (bare minimum requirement for eve I think), and after updating drivers, it works but itÆs very laggy.
the card i'm thinking of updating to is this : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7679746&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01151&id=1134703552677 Type of Video Card Graphics Video Memory 256MB Interface Slot Type AGP Type of Processor NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Number of Processors 1 clock Speed of Video Memory (RAMDAC) Dual RAMDACS at 400Hz Maximum 2D Resolution (at 32-bit color) 2048 x 1536 Maximum 3D Resolution (at 32-bit color) 2048 x 1536 Supports MPEG-1, 2 Yes System Requirements Available AGP slot; minimum of 300W power supply
i'm looking for a few honest opinions on whether this is up-to-date enough to run eve decently, how long it ôwill be up-to-dateö, and what all that technical stuff means in the world of gaming.
please keep in mind, i'm not looking to win any graphics contests. i'm just looking to make this computer work decently and not like it's several years old. Any help would be appreciated and please donÆt say buy a new computer. IÆm doing this to learn about this stuff. Since eve is the most graphic intensive thing I do on my computer atm, I thought it would be best to ask itÆs playerbase. thanks

sucks is a little harsh... :)
it isnt one of the better ones, AFAIK the 6200 uses system RAM as well as the little biut it has on its own, it is kinda a half way house between onboard GFX and a separate card.
Go for a 6600gt 6800gt or a 7 series...

will it really be bad even with it feeding off 1.256 system ram?

It's not so much that but the fact it has to use system RAM, this means there will be a lot of traffic going through the datapipes instead of using the RAM which is on the card itself.
So it'll work really bad, don't invest in a card like that.

Edited by: sharkyballs on 10/11/2006 23:13:11 this isn't an investment, i'm trying to learn, and just upgrade cheaply and hopefully make the graphics not lag while sitting in station. i don't need to see spacedust while zoomed out 100km.
maybe i should clarify laggy with the current bare minimum. ---- i type a word in the chat, while docked and it takes a second or two for it to appear. this in-turn makes me afraid to undock with that kind of lag.
will using something around the same quality as the 6200 at least make the game playable to the point that it's not close to that bad? that's probably a better thing to ask.

Could just be your system is too old (i.e. slow processor and RAM too).
Also, there are advanced graphic settings, you could try turning those down (of the escape->options menu I think). There may be more hidden options in one of those eve config files on your disk, as well.
If you have an ancient card, a newer card with 256MB ram will certainly help. Make sure your motherboard supports the AGP speed (they come in x 1, x2, x4, and x8 speed varieties).

I would trash the Nvidia idea all together and go with ATI. Radeon x850xt FTW

Get the best graphics card you can afford to buy (AGP ONLY!!), EvE is getting a graphics update in the none too distant future and it's gonna render a lot of older systems a bit past it.

as previously stated, the point of this was not to have graphics that melt my eyes, it was to upgrade an older computer to working.
all you people that spend insane amounts of money on a graphics card to play a game are crazy. you don't need that much unless your doing graphics design professionally.
because a local store here would let me "try it out" and bring it back in 2 weeks if it didn't work good enough.....i spent very little money and bought an nvidia geforce fx 5200. IT RUNS JUST FINE and looks much better than it did before. a little lag here and there, but that's from the game, or the fact that it's only a 2.0 GHz processor.
