Hi all :)
Before i say what im going to say, it was partly my own fault but im still unhappy how i lost 80 million! :(
I started playing eve about a year ago, i played it for about 3 months training up to get a Raven as i heard Raven was a good all round ship :) ...at the same time i was doing missions & selling items to gather funds for it. Anywayz after about 3 months I had to quit EVE due to real life things.
2 nights ago, I decided to go ahead & re-install EVE & continue playing it :) after many emails to CS to recover my password which i had forgot! i was finally able to renew my sub & continue my adventure! :D
When i left EVE i was still a *newbie* as some might say, & i was still learning alot. After logging in for the 1st time, the 1st thing i did was check up to see what skills i needed for the raven. All i missed was 2 skills, so I began to train, I checked up on my funds & i had 90million (about 20 million short for the raven) So i decided to do some missions, after 2 or 3 missions this is where i made a HUGE mistake! :(
I taken a courier mission to set me up ready for tommorow when i log-in as the time was about 2am & was about to log!, I thought all was well until i noticed my wallet flashing at me. I went inside to check it & i had 10 million left! At 1st i didnt know what happened & then i realised, it was because of the courier mission I just accepted :(
I know it was my own fault, but needless to say this was a scam. After checking up on the courier details I had to tracel 42 jumps to the pickup location through many 0.0 sectors, which i managed to do. I then had to travel a further 50+ jumps to drop it off. As expected, 10 or so jumps into the delivery, I got pod killed & there goes my parcel & the 80 million :(
During this episode a few people tried to help me which im very grateful for & appreciated the help, its good to know that there are some people who are helpful & friendly :) One person was even going to meet me at the pickup location of where i had to go, so i could escrow it to them as they were much higher level than me & they would deliver it for me, but unfortunately, i had to log because i had to my children to school! :(
Anyways, at 1st my 1st reaction (which im sure many others in my situation would have thought) was to quit. I had just returned after about a 9 month break & i lose 80 million in the 1st hour! :( & there went all chances of me getting my raven which i had worked so hard at from the beginning of playing this game.
But instead, I logged... took a break after being up all night trying to solve the problem, I was from about 2am through to about 4pm the next day trying to complete the mission with small breaks inbetween to do real life things. I knew my chances were slim of being able to complete it, but the thought of losing 80 million was a not nice so it was either do nothing or at least try.
Anywayz ive decided to keep playing, I have a few million left to get me back on my feet & i still have my caracal ship.
As said, i know it was my own fault, but when i accepted the mission, part of the mission window was hidden behind another window so i did not see the 80 million coll charge which i had no idea about, I was tired after just re-installing the game & i was just checking up on my skills etc & decided to take a mission to set me up for the following day :(
Anywayz thanks very much for those that tried to help :) My char name is Erazar & ive added those that tried to help to my buddy list :)
The one thing i would like to see changed is way missions are given/accepted. If a simple option was available to cancel a mission as long we dont leave the station we got it from, all of this could have been avoided. Instead im left 80 million short & all chances gone of being able to get what i had saved up for since i began playing! :(

& yup ive learned the hard way i guess! :(
Annoying thing is, im usually one for taking things slow & learning before i jump into things, but i think the excitement of logging in ater a long break took over! :(

If it's much of a help, in the future (Kali) there are said to be a kind of contract system. This allows you to track the "legality" of business deals made with certain people, don't know how much it'll work for courier missions though. Pretty much the entire system is just made up of griefmissions now, but in Jita/Rens/other hubs, you can very easily find people who will transport stuff in highsec. I announced I needed a Heavy MSL moved just nine jumps (well, eighteen, really), and for a collateral that paid exactly the local sell orders, and a profit of 12%, it was done before the next day. If you want to, just come to Metropolis with me and mine, we'll make golden millions from omber in no time. --- I tank armour. REAL men tank structure REAL men tank pod! REAL Minmatar tank skin. |

Edited by: Zhaine on 11/11/2006 13:22:07 Sad to hear about the loss mate but it's also very very good to hear your positive attitude to the situation, and that you're picking up the pieces and carrying on. One thing that makes Eve so great is that it can make you feel utterly crap sometimes. It makes the victories and the good times so much better. Keep going, it's worth it, and bear in mind that a lesson learned the hard way is a lesson well learned - - - - - - - - - -

ty for replys guys :)
80 mill might not be alot to you or most people, but to me ..its what i made since i played the game! but it was also the money i was saving for my new ship :(
But as said i was going to plod-on & start saving all over, infact i was in the process of re-fitting my Caracal after i stripped it to sell all items for the funds towards my Raven which at the time before this happened i had enough for!
But,...i recieved a pm from someone about an hour ago (who asked not to be named for obvious reasons) after a chat he offered me a loan (interest free!) which i will be paying back which has enabled me to buy my raven now :D
I was not expecting this with the luck ive had! so this indeed was a great relief :D
So im now finally (after this episode) a proud new owner of a Raven :D
Thanks alot <Mr.Anon!) for helping me out in this situation & you can be sure I will keep my word :)
& thanks for comments guys, As they say, we learn by our mistakes! :(

oh yes, almost forgot..
For those of you that read this & are indeed *scammers* its people like you that ruin mmorpg's. To you its a quick way to make a profit.
But why bother playing an mmorpg if your going to scam your way? That's just *easy mode* (maybe you should go back to WoW) anyone of us can scam to make profits, but then theres no feel of achievement, think about it, your paying a monthly sub to *scam* people.
I felt good knowing i had saved almost 100mill to buy my ship. If i scammed someone of that 100million + more, buying my new ship/items whatever would have meant nothing as i gained no real achievement.
I'd rather spend time/effort building up my own char than cheat someone else out of theres.
So to all you scammers out there, your nothing but pathetic.

Bah, its people like you who come and cry on the forums when you don't explore your options and the repercussions of those options when making decisions that clutter up the forum to no end.
RTFM next time. it was not "partly" your fault, it was 100% your fault. Take responsiblity for yourself man, because until you do, you will constantly be getting screwed over, both in-game and in real life.
anyhow, a good read, and perhaps it will keep a some number of mouth-breathers from making a similar mistake. that is.. if they take the time to read.
A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice. |

People play this game instead of wow to get away from the grind scamming might not be a full time thing to them just something to do on the side.
When i play this game tired i do stupid things as well i just accept that risk or choose to play eve when im properly awake. This game is no way near as forgiving as other mmorphs might be. You have to think harder and plan ahead.
Suck it up move on and find a better way of making isk because mission running level 3's in a cruiser is a sure slow way of making isk especially solo.

Actually, scammers make this game interesting. You've had plenty of opportunity to learn what this game is all about, so accept that they're here and just playing a game or move on to a more enforced game. ----- Im in ur Chicago wearing dresses at night. |

You even said yourself, You were amazed how i made it that far (think it was about 70+ jumps in 0.0 sector) before you got me :P
@ Jim Jemai, not really (re-read my post), I played for less than 3 months before i quit for about 9+ months & only just returned :)

Good luck getting back on your feet - and it sounds like you made a good run at it!
(Just be glad you didn't get to the destination and find out that the mission needed you to deliver it to a station you couldn't dock at! (That's another favourite with the scammers).
If you go with running missions I recommend level 3 combat missions to get you started - it's worth mining out the Omber 'roids in them too when you get missions with asteroid belts.
I would go for a corp other than caldari navy though as their decent/high end systems are always crowded and laggy.

Another? How was this a scram to begin with? The guy took a courier mission without a clue and failed it, there isn't a scam near it.

Ah come on no need to flame this thread. The guy's not a whiner or an idiot, he knows he made a mistake and he's moving on ok?
With regards to the post a bit earlier (I'm too drunk to quote it), I agree in that I could never scam becuase it would ruin the sense of achievement in gaining the isk, but on the other hand scammers and pirates and other (in character) scum are great because they represnet part of the risk in this game and so make it what it is. Trust me your loss will make that Raven all the sweeter once you've paid your debt back. - - - - - - - - - -

Well. I reckon the scam is right there - probably on the thinking that it might be worth something at least if they broke it. where did you happen to meet this person?
And to be honest, as much as it sucks for you... I disagree with your view on the game comepletely, and think that the only thing thats really "lame" is trying to tell people (especially when you've only just come back to a game you admit you are new at) how to play and judging them as people for how they roleplay a game.
Greed, corruption, piracy and underhand tricks are for the most part all perfectly acceptable and set this game apart from all the others.
Keeping you out of a Raven for a few days was probably a good thing, by the sounds of things you'd probably only wrap yourself around a billboard or something in it. :p
Having said that, Welcome back, hope you have fun, and please dont join the ranks of the narrow minded and throw the lame tag at everyone you dont agree with. :)

About the thread, couriers missions are underrated. it's really a nice way to make cash, but cant wait we got the ability to filter out the courier creator... it's always the same doing the "scams" (for lack of a better word) ------

I know it was my own fault, but it stil dont change the fact that scammers are nothing but pathetic in all mmorpgs, i have no time for them at all.
Thanks for the offer of more help with the ISK guys, much appreciated but im now back on my feet thanks to the help ive had & going to plod-on :-)
In a way though what happened to me was a *good* thing, because ive met good/friendly people who have helped me & got to know them pretty well, it even lead the way for me to join an alliance who have gave me more info/advice in 1 night that ive learned since playing the game!! :D
So all was not bad i guess :-)
On a final note, I know people like to help (& believe me, i really appreciate it) but im now back up & running thanks to the help ive had :-) So i no longer need ISK, thanks again for all the help (you know who you are!) Im pretty sure if it wasnt for the help & the people ive met because of this I probably would have quit for good!
Anywayz, thanks again for advice & info & see you out there!

Edited by: Vargrh on 12/11/2006 20:53:00 Game dynamic allows for fully open character development. Obtaining ingame assets by scamming, theft, piracy, etc are all legitimate game play styles. It is also easy to avoid being a victim by paying attention to market and mission transactions before accepting them. Whilst it is annoying to loose concentration and end up making a mistake that costs you time and ingame currency, it is overall fully your own responsibility and not the person 'scamming'.

I think it just goes to demonstrate the moral fiber of a minority of people that play Eve. They have NO empathy (they will have to go look that word up) for others and I swear they actually enjoy making people suffer. And to insinuate that the OP was in some way deserving of such a fate I find tacky. You can tell from the OPÆs post that he is of standard (or most likely above standard) intelligence and was simply rooked by some artard whos sole purpose in Eve is to weedle stuff out of people by taking advantage of game functionality that is not ideally suited to protect people.
It would seem to me to be completely jacked up, but the game still exists so I am wrong by example.... and by the growth of Eve I am VERY wrong. *sighs*
Maybe we are all destined to get taken once,,, it is avoiding the second time that drives us.
