Honestly right now it really doesn't matter if you're referring to the high end cards.
the x1950 does some things better than the 8800 and the 8800 does some things better than the x1950.
The x1950 performs better for more modern games though according to benchmarks.

Over the years I've tended to go one then the other on my PC's. As was said by the first reply it's much of a muchness. I currently have an ATI x800xt thats about 2 years old and it's still fine. I'm currently looking at building a new PC and I'm going to get an nVidia 7600 GT (going to go from agp to pci-e since I want a new mobo).

I prefer Nvidia myself, but there's not much of a difference in performe (on the overall). I currently have a Gforce 7900 GT, which does its job rather nicely. The 8800 currently is king... but that was to be expected with the new DX10 generation cards.

ATI, my last 2 cards have been Nvid, currently have a 7900gt and i'm not at all happy with the jaggly shadows, this is in high qaulity mode , weird artifacts appearing in some games as well as general poor performance.
I really hope ATI have their **** together.
If I had ú1 for every intelligent comment posted in general discussion, I'd be hideously in debt |

Edited by: Dee Ellis on 11/11/2006 13:03:30 When looking a few years ahead.. ATi just doesn't compare..
And Brolly, with a crappy card like that, just lower the shadows and e verything else will run great.

Long time NVIDIA user with ATI sporadically in-between...
Right now may main rig has a x1800xt
I'm going back to NVIDIA for my next card. I had to go through 2 MB's to get the x1800xt drivers to work properly, total BS...

nVidia here, i was a long time ATI user but switched to nvidia on my latest PC and i love it
currently have a 7950GX2 and with every setting in F.E.A.R. i could find maxxed i still sat at a comfortable 60FPS minimum with explosions everywhere (CPU is severely bottleneck for me atm)
oblivion ran slightly worse then F.E.A.R. though, at about 60FPS peak and 40 average, 30s with spells + dynamic lighting with every setting i could find maxxed, if i tone the dynamic lighting and shadows down to medium it shoots into the 100FPS

Edited by: Anatolius on 11/11/2006 20:50:15 Been a long fan of nVidia (my GeForce 4 MX 440 was, without a doubt, the single greatest video card ever devised by man), but when that stopped working due to asinine programmers *demanding* the presence of HW T&L (instead of making games just a wee bit uglier without it :P), I had to upgrade.
Next box (which mind you, is the box I'm typing from, a 2.0 GHz Opteron which is still kicking arse and taking names against anything I throw at it).. Went with a GeForce FX 5700 LE or some such. Biggest piece of crap ever. Mind you, Open GL games ran with sheer awesomeness. Anything DirectX would crap out; either crap framerates, or weird black artifacts everywhere.
I'm willing to entertain the thought that Chaintech has no clue what they're doing when it comes to video cards, however, I decided to try my friend's ATI for the sake of making sure my mobo wasn't borked to hell; to verify that it was in fact the POS Chaintech card.
Unfortunately for me, after downloading the latest drivers from ATI, I ended up with no OpenGL support. Couldn't run all the fancy ATI software that does amazingly cool things, either. Erm, yeah. Sorry, ATI, you lose. (Mind you, I'm sure it would've worked wonderfully had I been using XP Professional or some other crap. The year 2000 called, though, and it wants its 32 bit processors back.)
Shoved my borked arse 5700LE back in for a bit, then it finally died catastrophically. I now have some sort of monstrous GeForce 6 2958295829582 X-TREEEEEEEEEEEEMEEEEEEE!!!!!!1111111111111111 or some such. Sure, it's outdated. Sure, it's AGP. (Sadly, there weren't no stinkin' PCI-X slots when I put this computer together.)
I've yet to have any problem with any game. Ah, what a fool I was to lose faith in nVidia.

Hmmm... x1950 a waste of cash cause you can overclock the x1900 to be just as good, if not better.
That said, if u arent into overclocking then go for the x1950 for simplicity's sake I helped - Cortes What a shiny and lovely place here - Eshtir Well lets make it a party atleast :D -Xorus RAWWWR!11!!1!2 SIG HIJACK!!11!1 I found it first, get orrrfff moiiii laaannnd - Cortes |

Same here brother. oh btw AMD has bought out ATI. the new name for both companies is "The New AMD" there's a rumor going around that intel and nvidia might merge. im not a big fan of intel mostly because of the higher running temps
