What is it that draws you to the game? If you have been playing for the entire 2 years it has been live, what has kept you there? Are their any disappointments you want to address?
With Dust having just celebrated its 2nd birthday, I wanted to get some player feedback to see what people still thought of the Dust 514. I'm looking for positive or negative experiences. I just want to know what people feel about Dust today, for an article I am writing.
Cheers, and thank you!
Yes, I did think to post this on the Dust 514 forum, however I am experiencing login problems. |

Initially, I thought about ignoring this thread and moving on. I really only ventured in this part of the forums to see what is happening in the Dust 514 universe; I am not impressed personally. So like I looked at this thread/post... But then I did not see any replies. Nothing, no feedback. So, I figured I would say what prevents me from playing Dust 514.
I only play on a desktop computer. I do not use consoles, which pretty much eliminates any possibility of me playing Dust. Same goes for Valkyrie. No interest in that virtual reality helmet thing so yeah. Cheers. |

Not to rub your face in it, but imho Mac is dead. PC's won that fight probably over a decade ago. If Mac's are truely dead, Dust 514 is MOAR dead.

I got into Dust in anticipation of what CCP said it would someday be.
Now, years later, with none of that in sight, I keep playing it because of the friendships I've made and the little bit of integration with EVE that still exists.

Dust, I can not play because I do not have Playstation 3. The desire is there but why should I buy one, maybe bring a CCP for news out as they finally put out there for the PC. |

I play Dust and Eve ,Dust is my main CCP Game.98 Million sp Dust,15 million Eve. Community is what keeps us playing Dust. Rage happens and the weak quit the game and the Community. When your slaying and you say this is the best match ever ,there is a team of players on the other side that say this sucks,Rage, there is nothing I can do to tilt the tide of battle ,they are after me like a pack of Dogs. This is the coin of Dust you flip it and you take what you get. |

Dust is the red-headed step child of the sandbox world. Birthed by CCP with the promise of legitimacy and incorporation with EVE yet cast aside after mismanagement or misguided development (or whatever other reasons we may never know).
But even down-trodden step children live on. And so does Dust.
And with Rattati and Shanghai's intervention the small pool of persistent vets and paltry supply of newbies trudge on.
Even shoddy, second rate sandboxes have sand (littered with feline leavings, as it were). Some of us are trying to bootstrap the PCU up a small notch.
We get it, we're not EVE.
We hear you, we're not capsuleers...
But we inhabit this cluster and you made us.
Our first attempt to break free has been derailed but by our will, Aurum and Ratatti's grace - we will find away to break out into the New Eden cluster.
And then you egg-dwelling bitches better watch out.
Delivered on behalf of Howard Sanchez, to the capsuleers of new eden

Partially the universe of New Eden but mainly the people who I've met playing Dust 514. They're of a good sort and the kind of people it was an absolute joy to joke around with and build up the Dust arm of our alliance with.
I still talk with most of them even despite their being spread across the USTZ and me being locked firmly in NZST and play other games with. Those are the guys that made the corp, alliance, and Dust worth 2.5 years of my time. |

Q: What is it that draws you to the game?
- I play DUST rather than EVE primarily because I like the experience of aiming myself rather than having my computer do the aiming. EVE combat is great in its own way, but after a year of EVE PVP I had a craving for a bit more of a direct combat experience.
- I play DUST rather than any other FPS because I like tactical and creative suit fittings. It is a lot like fitting your ship in EVE.
- I play DUST because I expect my character to still exist in 10 years, so I don't feel like I am wasting my time. I like persistence.
- DUST has 16 vs 16 fights. I don't see teams that large in other FPS games.
- I like Meta Game. Many FPS players did not even know what Meta Game was until they came to DUST.
- I see constant improvement to the game since Rattati took over.
- I feel like I am contributing to the development of the game due to the amount of interaction Rattati has with the community in the development process.
Q: If you have been playing for the entire 2 years it has been live, what has kept you there?
- Pre Rogue Wedding (Fan Fest 2014) I played for the potential of what DUST could become. This is particularly true during Uprising 1.7, which absolutely sucked and was a pain to play.
- After the Rogue Wedding it appeared that DUST had no immediate future, so I asked myself "Am I having fun playing this game?" Luckily Uprising 1.8 had just dropped, so the answer was actually "Yes". With 1.8, for the first time in a long time, DUST did not suck. So I kept playing.
- Then the Rattati era began, and the game started to show noticeable and rapid improvement. Now I am both having fun, and looking forward to what DUST can become.
Q: Are their any disappointments you want to address?
- Uprising 1.7
- Inability to step over 4" curbs.
- Missing Amarr and Gallente Heavy weapons.
- Missing Amarr and Minmatar vehicles.
- No PVE.
- Crappy in game mail, and no access to EVE Gate.
- Lack of Corp management tools, and no ability in DUST to manage or even join Alliances. (Need an EVE player just to join an Alliance.) |

I was originally drawn to the idea of a persistent world with connections to EvE.
Wolf Merrik wrote: If you have been playing for the entire 2 years it has been live, what has kept you there?
I took a six month break not too long after Legion was announced and I realized Dust had no real future. I've come back occasionally because missile tanks are hilarious fun when the game isn't going to the dogs.
Wolf Merrik wrote: Are their any disappointments you want to address?
Inconsistent FPS. Memory leaks after 2 years. Tons of real money items being added, zero real content. Poor server performance Very little meaningful information from the devs and CSM.

If only they would make real repairs rather than continue to include more OP weapons like the bolt pistol (a side arm) which lands as much damage as a sniper rifle or rail rifles that seem to carry their damage twice as far as they should, but only for individuals in certain corps. Ever been in a suit with 900-1000 HP and dropped by one guy with his rail rifle from 141 meters? Really What is that about. Repairs on the maps would also be nice. Getting stuck next to the point between steps has been an issue since the map was introduced a year ago. Waiting for deployment has become an issue as well. How many times should a deployment fail before you get into battle? Or how long should a player expect it to take to get fixed? A week, A month, A year? And when it does get repaired, what old problem will be re-introduced to the game; Only to deal with older problems all over again. Public matches need to be reconsidered as well. I watch so many good gamers play this game, or try to become involved but never get an opportunity to really enjoy the experience because certain 'bully' corps do everything they can to destroy everything in sight.
First impressions mean a lot. You can make or break a decision based on that impression. Honestly after playing DUST 514 from Day 1 has been a 'hellofaride' and a good time. But if I had to start the game now as a new player, the software would have been removed from my ps3 within a week.
A few things CCP may want to consider...
1. Replacing one OP weapon with another OP weapon IS NOT a repair. 2. Changing squad sizes but not including Scotty in the decision, is a poor decision. 3. allowing established OP corps to 'sync' into public matches (where new players are trying to figure it out) is just wrong and by doing so reduces potential for a 'new player base' 4. Ignoring map issues that have been reported over and over indicates lack of communication on the behalf of CCP and indicates that players are not their #1 prority. 5. waiting to deploy for 5-6 minutes only to be kicked and start over 3,4,5,6,7 times before getting into battle is a huge waste of the little time I have to game. Sometimes as long as 40min. to actually deploy.
1-5 are the main reasons I stopped putting money into the game. I have put a lot in, and in a way I recognized subconsciously that CCP must not want anymore of my money, or they just do not care about my experience in the game. I don't mind getting shot up, I mind that it is a market based game and losses due to the same issues over and over indicate they just don't care.
Now what was the question? OH! why I play.....
Well I play a lot less now because when I choose to play a game, I want to have fun. Loading DUST 514 has become a coin toss of what happened this time. Often I choose to do something else.
CCP- you need to FOCUS. I may not feel this way IF every video I have seen of CCP, they act like there job is just a big party. Believe me, it is beginning to show in both games; EvE Online and DUST 514.
I had high hopes that they would tie the games together as mentioned in the past, but I do not believe CCP has what it takes to really pull it off. That is the difference between a professional programming studio, and a group of people who know how to program; But really have their mind on fun, games, parties. I do not believe the card of getting the games to really mesh was ever in the deck to begin with, but rather a good idea that simply put is not in their ability.
why I play? I have no clue anymore. A few friends I have met along the way, but we can talk now anywhere. The whole world is now designed for just that. Communication. With Communication now said, Hmmmm. CCP TALK TO EACH OTHER, fix the game. Please! Balance the game. Please! Make it friendly for new players. Please!
Thank you That is all.

Some statements by the developers as to internal playtests they can't talk about, and the CPM saying the CCP Shanghai office has been very busy recently - moreso than before - has me hoping we'll at least hear about where they're taking the game next soon.
I mean, as far as the PC vs PS4 battle, I'd have to say PS4 because of the pretty fanatically dedicated community the game has always had and still has on the PSN, especially considering we somehow managed to make the game profitable despite there being less than 10,000 of us.
I play both PC and Console games, so I'll likely play the game either way, but I'd hate to see friends I've played with for months disappear because they can't or don't want to move to PC.

Why not cross platform? And don't say pc hacks. CCP check for such things and there are More than enough console gamers with nodded controllers or turbo functions which is just as bad in my opinion. |

Let me draw your attention to the actual Dust Forums, where the "General Discussions" board has 92,345 topics.
I don't think this is a hugely meaningful metric, as those Dust Bunnies (amongst whom I count myself) can be as verbose as the animals they're named after are libidinous, but it hopefully is at least sufficient to establish that, to those who support it, it is far from dead.
What is a meaningful metric? I like Eve Offline's numbers, where you'll see Dust usually has about 1/10th of the EVE population logged in at any given time.
That's really not too bad for an aged FPS on a console with one foot in the grave. It's a testament to the game's solid fundamentals. What do you think it would look like released on the PC, within the closer grasp of EVE's populace, and where it could achieve so much more of what it was always meant to but couldn't on the PS3? |
