Some of you may have noticed that since beta ended, both Gallente and Amarr ships have had most of their launcher slots removed--right now only 1 cruiser from each race has a launcher, Celestis for Gallente and Arbitrator for Amarr.
This puts both at a significant disadvantage to Caldari and Minmatar when it comes to missiles, as we have no defense against them, and ALL of each of those races' cruisers have launcher slots.
I would propose that a new turret (or perhaps some other high-slot module) be created to defend against missiles.
Since defender missiles are rather expensive, it'd make sense to make it use alot of energy, similar to a smartbomb. Just make it act the same as defender missiles: You see an enemy missile so you activate it. ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. I <3 ( . Smartbombs work against missiles?
Why did I never think of that? ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. I <3 ( . Y . ) |

I'd like to see better alternatives to the standard ECM modules that occupy high slots. My own ship never intends to engage in combat, so I'd much prefer defensive modules.
At present, defender missiles are the only option (do smartbombs go in high slots ?).

Yes, smartbombs go in high-slots.
They are actually quite useful--especially against drones or the lesser frigates. ------------- My salsa makes all the pretty girls want to dance and take off their underpants. I <3 ( . Y . ) |

One problem, as a Gallente, I use alot of drones. All of the other Gallente ships that do not have missile slots have good drone bays. Even one of the Amarr cruiser that has no missle slots has a large drone bay. This makes using the smartbomb not an option because we will kill our own drones. Unless we never deploy them, and if we did that, then what is the point in having drones in the first place?
Plus the smartbomb is not even close to being an option is close fleet warfare, while the defender missile can be fired all day long.
I'm still in favor for another option, what ever it may be.

There's an option no one mentioned ... learn to pilot a ship with missile capability. I'd love a frigate with three turrets. No such caldari craft exists atm, so I can either deal with the 2 turret cap and rely on missiles to fill the void [I'm told caldari by their nature are missile oriented in any event] or I can go back to school and learn to pilot the craft of my galactic neighbors.
Each ship has its pros and cons, otherwise there's no reason to make more then one ship per class [frigate ... cruiser ... etc]

@Microbe:
I thought the same way until I realized something: drones do not stay with your ship - they are engaging the enemy at close range!
So - unless you fight at close range, too, you can use smartbombs without problems once your drones are away.

How about a Point Defense Laser? Give it low fitting requirements and make a small turret, but make it fire relatively slowly for low cap usage, or have a high RoF with more cap usage so it could only be used in bursts. Cloista Shadowblade. CEO of the Eligible Target Corp |
