Downloaded the beta, and the erm *unofficial* patch that enables the lan function on it the other day and I've got to say I'm very impressed.
First off its obviously a beta, lag gets a little nasty after about 30mins play so there's a mem leak somewhere, and although it worked first time on my 7600GT my mate spent about 30 mins trying all the fixes to get it to run on his 6600GT eventually managed by forcing its resolution with a command line.
Apart from the bugs (to be expected) most of the race content is in and most of the textures too, and it looks very shiny.
First of the shift click to queue commands (aka TA) is back and as good as always, even gives you a ETA on when the building will be complete. System is slightly buffed too, builders will auto clear the terrain of rocks trees etc before building, and you can start unit queues and waypoints out a factory before its even build too (handy).
The zoom feature is seamless and I cannot praise it enough, its wonderful, best invention in an rts since, well... ever. No having to use mini maps and panning around the screen to find stuff simply zoom out, and refocus back on the action, it wouldn't surprise me if this becomes a standard feature in all rts's from now on. This also means you can have some massive scale differences in the units the basic T1 robot would barely come up to the commanders knee whereas the MonkeyLord (stompy spider robot you'll have seen in the trailers) is two times maybe three times as big as him.
The races are a little samey to my eyes, there weapons are all different (all shots are calculated real-time taking into account tracking, movements etc..) Cybrans all use line of sight laser weapons so there aim is lethal, meet them with a similar force of UEF and you'll get owned, however since uef use shells and fire them in arcs there tracking might be a bit off but they can shoot over stuff, fight the Cybrans around a hill and the lasers will just make holes in the ground. The units themselves feel just like mirrors each race gets a t1 robot, a t1 tank, etc.. there's no variation. But again more might be coming post beta so I'll hold judgement on that.
Atm the UI is horrific, takes up almost half the screen and it needs to be changed, apparently the UI will be fully customisable in the game so if that's the case then this is a moot point.
That's pretty much a brief overview so far, feel free to ask questions and I'll try to answer them based on what I've played so far, oh and I'll work on getting some screenies for you to chew on too.
...oh and nukes are awesome, they take ages to build but make a seriously impressive bang, Seriously impressive

Mamo, there are certain ways of 'accquiring' the beta program. I'm sure if you look around on the web you can find one

Yes, the whole game feels like a follow up to to total annihilation, your resources are mass and energy, shift click to queue up commands and expand outwards as fast as possible, whiles zerging as many units as possible.
Its a totally different beast to dow/coh you're not dealing with small squads and focused fire, you're dealing with massive amounts of fire-power attacking from as many angles as possible.
the only difference on the basic TA stratagy I can find are:
a) building factory's next to mass miners and power generators makes the factory slightly more efficient in production, so you have a choice of build together and gain more units, but be much more vulnerable to atry fire and nukes.
b) Buildings can be upgraded, so rather than having a t1, t2 and t3 land factory when you get time pause production and upgrade the t1 land factory to a t2 one, that opens up the t2 unit menu (it can still produce t1 units though). Also you can upgrade your mass miners on the fly too, unlike old TA style when you had to reclaim the old miner to build a moho-miner on it.

Great game but playing against the AI is a bit boring (still challenging but just not as fun as playing against a friend)
Once it comes out officially its going to be great with loads more ppl playing
Ralus are you the one i played against during the 1 day downtime?

Love the "ferry" function. Setup waypoints so that newly created units automaticly are ferried by flying transports to the front. If the front gets pushed forward or back, just move the ferry point.
Thats a function thats gonna be useful on the maps, the word "huge" doesnt do them justice.

Ralus you can also use direct connect or the program hamachi.
Hamachi sets up a virtual lan, that way you can play against people from across the world the same way as you would play against your roommate.

I've got the beta and a key but I can't play online. After launching GPGNet, it downloads a patch but then the patch complains about missing files and it just quits. I have however been watching loads of replays and I am very impressed. The absolute hordes of units on screen bring a joyfull tear to my eye as I am reminded of TA.

A hint to those who aren't FilePlanet subscribers and want to get in on the beta.
A certain bay of pirates, apparently, has the beta available for download.

Kay: Find the unofficial 'patches' that allow LAN and Skirmish mode ;)
I've been playing SupCom vs the AI's and I've spotted a few things:
1) IT MUNCHES RESOURCES. Seriously, if you want to be doing more than playing the 'sandbox' mode you're gonna need a good cpu (talking dualcore here by the looks of things) and possibly a good graphics card. Lots of memory too. Hopefully they'll tweak this a bit before release so it doesn't use quite as much stuff. Could just be my pc, but I doubt it...
2) The uber units and buildings take forever-and-a-day to build (103 minutes or thereabouts for a nuke silo =P). This can be helped by applying many builders to one building but it's much more resource intensive (ingame resources, that is). Fair 'nuff, really.
3) The experimental units all pwn =]
4) It pwns too.

Yeah Just got the beta awhile ago and patched it so could play on LAN, only had one quick game so far though so I need to play it some more (if I can tear myself away from EVE for a few hours....)
awesome game though that much I do know, and anyone a fan of Total Annailation or just RTS's HAS to get it, the shear scale of the game is dam impressive and looks more fun than a barrel of monkeys

Yea It looks like a very cpu intensive game, I suppose theres a lot of physics calculations to be done on a big fight as its got to trace every ammo round in the game. My gfx card seems to be quite happy but my little athlon 64 was sweating

It's a beta. My dual core 4.6 starts sweating as well after a couple minutes with the AI. I'm sure it's just because they haven't fully developed and optimized it. Remember, it's still a beta. Final release isn't till sometime late January I believe.
If the slowness is just due to a large number of units (multiplayer here) then simply hit minus on the numpad to slow the game somewhat. It will run more smooth and allow you to zoom smoothly as well. Just everything will move and build slower.

If you have a 2.7 beta, which I guess almost all of us do, there are memory leaks when playing with AI, so if you playu with AI it gets all laggy after a while, more AI you get the lag comes sooner and is worse. As suggested before (or in the "patch") this is supposed to be played on Hamachi with people.
About the game. Looks interesting, one thing i really dont like is the hug HUD, only like 1/2 of the screen is covered with actually interactiv eplaying field, and that is bothering me. Not used to it, and somehow still cant get to. Cept for that...i dont know, somehow i still like TA better.

Actually, GPG themselves said on their official forums that they dont mind if you modify the game so that you can play lan and skirmishes.
Its just a matter of playing with lua.scd, which can be simply opened by winrar, for example (it appears to be an archive), and then you can edit the files inside directly by doubleclicking on them (.lua filetype needs to be associated with some text editor, otherwise youll get preview window without the ability to modify anything). LAN can be enabled by simply changing beta flag that is in one of those files inside the archive from 1 to 0. There is even a comment inside that file that they dont really care . Alas, adding AI is a bit more tricky.
As for laggy gameplay when playing with AI - for some reason there is alot logging behind ai, so much that it actually bogs down your pc. Just open \lua\tests\testutils.lua from that archive, find 'insert(self, concat(arg, self.sep))', put # before it, then the same with 'insert(self, self.newline)', save. Works for me at least - R x1900, 1gig ram, A64 2ghz and no problems with playing against one or two AI opponents on smaller maps. On bigger ones you just get too many units, lags even without ai.
Alternatively, do a search for Supreme_Commander_27_Speed_patch, youll get modified lua.scd with skirmish, AI and LAN enabled as well as 'fixed' AI logging. If it doesnt work, SC wont start etc. (happens), just open both original and modified lua.scd, find differences and make the changes yourself.
Of course, without the beta key, you wont be able to get into the official lobby, which is the whole point of beta.
As for the game itsef... been playing with ai for a bit (wish i had someone to play with ) and i must say im impressed - SupCom lives up to the hype. A must have for every TA fan. Actually, with few changes here and there, it has potential to become even better than TA.
