Cool I'll check 'em out I found when I was reading the GAP books by Stephen Donaldson that they had a sligthtly more ruthless way of getting his story across than Issac Asimov .
Have to say though Issac Asimov is my personal best sci-fi writer to date and IMHO greatly overlooked( even if they have made a few films out of his books).

One of my favorite sci-fi books is "The Forge of God" by Greg Bear, and it's sequel "Anvil of Stars". Of course, got to mention the Dune books, and Ender's Game, oh and an odd one but one I love - "Sentenced to Prism" by Alan Dean Foster. Foster also has his Adventures of Pip and Flynx series, which I loved when I was younger.

My favourite Asimov books are the Elijah Bailey novels. What I do like is in Foundation and Earth when they arrive in our solar system and discover whats on the moon.
I've said it before on these forums and I'll say it again.

Best sci-fi author is Iain M Banks.
Read (in order) 'Consider Phlebas', 'Use of weapons', 'Player of games' and 'Excession'.
Stephen Donaldson should have been smothered at birth. ------------- 'Don't try to learn Eve all at once, otherwise your brain will explode' - Albert Einstein ------------ |

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 16/11/2006 02:57:33 I've read quite a lot of Asimov but I just can't stand the Foundation series, it spans to too much time , I just feel lost in that. And yes, I like the Elijah Baley series a lot.
Other good writers are ; A.C. Clarke, Heinlein, J. Pournelle, Jack Vance, larry Niven.

L Ron Hubbard is a freak - HE start scientology donchaknow!
Anyhoo - Depending on the feel for the kind of Sci0Fi there is a slightly different way to go for some good reading. The CyberPunk genre has some great stuff. William Gibson and Neal Stephensen are the 2 most recognised ones.
Think Blade Runner, and you get close.
Also going on from Blade Runner, almost anything by Philip K **** is good too.
Aasimov is a good read, especially Foundation series. He certainly has done some great stuff. Frank Herbert's Dune series is also good, but stop at book 3, it's a bit weird after that. And don't think you saw the movie, you know the book, the movie is about 10% of the first book.
There are some great books out there. I have not yet read Greg Bear, but I do hear a lot of good things.

Anything written by these three are classics, and in the same class as Asimov, though with different writing styles.

If you like Asimov you should give Heinlein a try. Stranger in a Strange Land is a good starting place. Other good books are Starship Troopers (don't let the ****ty film put you off), I Will Fear no Evil, and the 6 last novels he wrote. All good stuff.
And you might want to check out Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trillogy too, hardcore, but ace!

Edited by: Mayoz Miner on 17/11/2006 01:18:08 hehe great replies read some of them books y'all posted about but some I haven't
I always find it a bit funny when I start talking to someone who reads books like in work or w/e, beacuse I say half way through the convo " so you heard of Issac Asimov" then they says no what type of books so when I say sci-fi the convo' take a downward spiral, oh well hehe.
Another thing is theres tones of people into sci-fi but I NEVER meet any IRL although I have tried to convert a few

Just my opinion, but Stephen Donaldson never wrote a good story aside from the Covenant series.
Other authors to consider...
Robert Heinlein ("Number of the Beast", "Cat Who Walks Through Walls"... and a bunch of other books from the same mythos)
Harry Harrison (esp. "Stainless Steel Rat" & "Bill the Galactic Hero"... though the Bill sequels sucked) Very tongue-in-cheek, and fun.
Jules Verne. 'nuff said.
Frank Herbert - Dune series, and a lot of other great ones. The Jesus Incident, The Lazrues Effect, The Godmakers, tonnes of other great shorter (and pulpier works). Very hung up on genetic manipulation.
Arthur C. Clarke... short stories to die for.
Ray Bradbury.
Never did care much for Alan Dean Foster, but many do. Oh well. _______

Yeah, I like Asimov, one of the "Old School" Sci-Fi writers. If you like Foundation you would probably like A C Clarkes' "Childhoods' End", and Bradburys' Martian Chronicles - but you have probably read those. I only read Heinleins' Starship Troopers fairly recently, which is pretty ggod.
Anyhow enough of that. I wandered over to my bookcase to look for something you mightnot have read:
Two Asimov "popular Science" essay collections -
"Far as Human Eye can See" - ...a captivating scientific scientific smorgasborg - enlightening, entertaining, and sparkling with wit, charm and intelligence...that is what is says on the back cover and I would'nt disagree. More of the same? Check out "Frontiers".
And now an old school classic that IMO really deserves Cult status - its a simple litle book, nothing really staggering, but its gotsomethingI keep coming bacj to: "The Last Starship from earth" by John Boyd. Crap title, but the tale is better than that.
And another little gem is "Einstein's Dreams" by Alan Lightman. Its quite poetic, the premise is Einstein muses on various possible forms Time might take, and what a world governed by such rules might be like. I quote:
"Suppose time is a circle, bending back on itself. The world repeats itself, precisely, endlessly"
or this one that starts: "In this world, time is like a flow of water, occasionally displaced by a bit of debris, a passing breeze. Now and then, some cosmic disturbance will casue a rivulet of time to turn away from the mainstream, to make connection upsteram. When this happens, birds, soli, people caught in the branching tributary find themselves suddenly carried to the past..."

Stephen Donaldson and Dan Simmons.
The GAP series is hands down the best work of gritty sci-fi you will ever find.
But you need a hard stomach for it.
