Does the game actually run? Looks like you're missing the Cache, Capture, and Logs folders.

All three of the "missing" folders are created by EVE when necessary. Try running EVE first and connecting before you edit prefs.ini.

IIRC, the files are not missing but rather in a different location. I remember reading in another thread that vista stores those files in some sort of cache of it's own. I don't remember which thread I was reading or where the folder resides now. You might try searching your entire computer for "prefs.ini", or some other cached file/folder and see if you can pull it up that way.

To unhide folders, click on tools at the top of your screen - folder options - go to the view tab - click the option for "show hidden files and folders" Granted, that's the XP way. I don't have Vista installed anymore, so I don't know if there's a difference.

Edited by: Regat Kozovv on 10/01/2007 20:40:51 The Cache is located in
C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\cache
It's a hidden folder. Quickest way to find it is to do an advanced search, select "search hidden folders", and look for "prefs.ini". When it's found (and it will find it) right click the file and select "open file location".

The problem is solved now, after the last patch everything worked ok, but I've since gone back to XP as Vista works as bout as well as a chocolate fire guard.
Oh and btw it has noting to do with being or not being an admin, no folders or files were hidden. Funny thing is that the folders that were missing are not needed for short time play i stumbled across this when installed eve onto a DVD i could play for up to 30min with out it crashing, obviously it wasn't writing anything into the files.

For the record, this is happening because of UAC -- apps don't have permissions to write to the Program Files folder directly when not run as an administrator. So, Vista redirects file access to a virtual location (the one listed above). To the app, this is transparent; it sees one view of the Program Files folder with the contents of the virtual location overlaid on top of the actual contents. Nothing strange here, it's normal (and arguably a good thing, but I still disable UAC myself). :) Isidien Provenance. www.eve-provenance.com -- looking for more pilots! |

Control Panel - Security Center - Other Security Settings (at least in my windows Vista Ultimate) it will be the last option, towards bottom, User Account Control.

You don't want to disable UAC. That would create a serious security hole.

That security hole exists in XP, but how many home users do you see that have a problem with it? Vista has some really neat security features, but most of them are not necessary for the majority of home users.

I think UAC is sorta misunderstood.
The reasoning behind UAC is not to patch a security hole per-se, but to provide a sort of "speed bump" whenever administrator privladges are invoked. In XP, most users run with full admin rights, which also meant that most programs excuted with the rights of that user. This lead to alot of malware and exploits compramising the machine, which they wouldn't have been able to do had they been running with the permissions of a normal user account.
In an ideal scenario, users would run with only the permissions required to perform their tasks, and only invoke higher rights as needed. This concept has been present in UNIX and later Linux for a long time, as users are encouraged to run with ordinary accounts and invoke "root" only as needed. For a variety of reasons, this never took off with XP. (Mainly for ease of use concerns, I believe.)
UAC was implimented as a kind of compramise to allow users to run with admin rights, but warn them whenever those privladges were being invoked without their intent, such as ActiveX or Java applications executing in the background or applications piggy-backing along with downloads. You would then have the option to cancel it's execution, whereas in XP it would simply run.
This is geared more towards home users actually, though most seem to blow by them or opt to disable them. To MSs credit, they spent alot of time testing this feature and try to avoid this scenario, while providing as much protection as possible. From the things I've heard, they're just as unsure about it as some end-users are.
Personally, I've convinced of it's usefulness. Soon after Supreme Commander was released, a patch came out. I played for a week pre-patch, then installed the patch. Suddenly I noticed that a "Sony SecurROM Installer" was trying to run every time I started the game. I got the UAC prompt, and canceled it's execution. Luckly the game still starts fine. but I suspect under XP this would have ran without my knowladge. No rootkits for me, thanks! =D
