when I was a month old, I got my pod ransomed for 50 mil. I told him the trick was to ransom for less than the pod was worth. he told me I had a set of implants in. I told him I didn't have the skills to even plug in an implant. He said I was lying and that I was not going anywhere until I paid up. I loggoffski. some people are just stupid.

Inflation.
Seriously though, 35 million? The thing that gets me is he only gave you 5 seconds. I think he just wanted to shoot you. And/or this was his first ransom. And/or he was high on goofballs.
Props to you for not letting it ruin EVE for you though. * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Yeah, this is why I find pirates that complain about people not paying ransoms funny. Because so far the ONLY ransoms I've even heard of from an in game source (Corp mates etc) have allways been for totally crazy sums of cash that make no sense.
Yes... I'm really giong to pay you 4x the combined value of my ship + fittings + implants + clone. When I can just tell you to shoot me and save myself alot of money.
I swear some of these people just dont bother to check to see what kinda player they've caught. I mean if I was ransoming and I caught some one in an osprey, first thing I'd do is check char age. If it's only a few months i'd assume +1 implants at maybe 300k a pop, 3.5M for the ship, and ignore the supposed value of the fittings since their not likely to be all that wonderful. Make the ransom maybe 4M
If he refused, pop the ship try to capture the pod, then ransom the pod for 1M. That fails well.. pop the pod.
It doesnt take much to figgure that kinda stuff out. And if you want a quick and easy guide, just go by the general value of the ship itself. L1 Battleships are worth bout 60M L2 Battleships are easily worth 90-105M Most cruisers are easily worth 3-8M etc.
I think this is why most supposed pirates dont even bother to ransom these days. They dont even have the attention span to do very basic on the spot calculations. ANd so maybe for the first bit demand outrageous sums like that of newbies and then get laughed at and stop bothering trying to ransom.
That and some really just are griefers (SUch as certain pirates that flat out put in their bio that they enhance their gaming experience by ruining yours) or they have the mindset that they'll just try to ransom for a value they consider worth their while and to heck with the actual persons capability to pay it (Lazy mans ransoming). Which may well have been the case here as well.
Cause I mean if I'd been in that sort of position but felt really lazy about it I might make the same demand simply because at the time I didnt reallyc are if you paid or not, thogh if you some how did I'd quite happily let you go on your way.

That was a stupid ransom.
When soloing I don't typically ransom ships - I ransom pods. I ask between 5-10 million, but never more than 10. 10 million ISK is a quick decision when you've got 80 million worth of imps in your head, and it's all about quick with me.
Don't take my word for it though I'm a pretty crappy pirate -- If by some chance I managed to kill you, I can assure you it was purely luck. |

Its win-win for the pirate - either he gets a lot of cash he wasn't expecting, or gets to blow you up.
By making an unreasonable ransom price that you can't pay, he has "legal basis" I suppose for blowing you up.

I'd never ransom for more than half the worth of the ship. That covers most kind of insurances, and if all goes well, the person returns at a later time. Outrageous ransoms more often pull people out of systems, I've seen that.
... Not that I've ever ransomed anyone.

This guy just sounds silly to me.
When I was a pirate I would try and ransom new and older characters for very little isk. I once tried to ransom a new guy in an Imacus for 300k, yes I had a few hundred million in my wallet. For me it was not a waste of time it was about the game. He refused to pay I tried my best to be a pirate and play that role. My objective was to get ISK and have a meaningful experience for both party's. I cant understand why peeps don't pay reasonable ransoms. I always tried to get ransoms from people who were docked or I couldn't find them. Never had any luck though.
I remember when I was new I entered a low sec system and a pirate was on the gate and I was in my brand new shiny AF and was shopping for guns. I knew I had to come back that way and convoed the pirate to get a pass. I paid him 2 million and he let me go. I just wish people would see this more for what it is, a game that peeps are role playing. If the price is reasonable pay the man (as Verone would say), and enjoy the experience. For me that was a fun encounter and I still chat to him now and again to this day. ---------------------------

MINI GUIDE TO RANSOMING....
Ok so I have no experience ransoming anyone at the moment... been ransomed a couple of times when i was a noob. However I am hopped up on the "R" thats Ritalin to all your folks without adult ADD. LOL. and I am pretty confident I can write about just about anything.
First what are your goals...?
Blow people up? Make effective ransoms?
If you just want to blow people up keep doing what your doing! 35 mil for that guy still on his trial account.
If you want to make effective ransoms I suggest adopting a pricing model. Before you charge into combat on this guy your about to ransom look up his char see how old he is and figure what his clone could possibly be worth a rough estimate will do.
Look at the ship hes flying? In a navitas? your out of luck he prolly will not be paying out much at all. However 500000 isk might fly just to be left alone. But with a ship and modules worth a combined total of like 10 isk... no really maybe 9 isk they will be laughing back to their clone bay. And you dont want to be laughed at do you? No I would think not.
Each ransom comes with a warranty! Thats right if your an honorable pirate you tell the person youve ransomed if they pay just how long that ransom lasts for. 1 hour / 1 day / 1 week etc whatever you feel like. But stick to that and when its up come back and visit and remind them. Nothing like hitting up your girls for cash on the street corner and keeping them hoes in line. Careful your becoming a Pimpin' Pirate!
Dont stick around. If someone is like yea sure im sending you the money right now... it will be like 1 minute... blow his ass up. Give him 10 seconds to make a decision (this is easier if your ransom is within reason) The best time I got ransomed and I was able to stall the pirate for a full 30 seconds enough time for my pvp alt and my roomate to warp in on me in a caracal and a thorax plenty of dps to take the pirate wannabe out.
We all know your first reaction is to ransom someone for a ridiculous amount of cash and hey you might be counting on them not paying up. What fun is eve with out explosions. But if you want to be a successful ransoming pirate its better that the locals know you mean business that your ransoms are spot on and payable. You know your in business when you pop into a system and your wallet lights up with out a word being said.
Ok thats about it... ehh... I cant beleive I actually wrote this...

If you weren't an alt and didn't have implants, he would lose nothing for charging you a high ransom and not getting it.
If you were an alt and he didn't charge a high ransom, he would miss the chance for lots of money.
So charging an overpriced pod ransom is a win-win situation for the pirate.

Why would an alt have implants? most noob alts are just scouts tbh, very rarely have implants in.
pod ransoms are tricky, you either get 50-100mil if they do have them or nothing generally.

Well what can I say, I see he only tells part of the story, what he did not tell you was 30 secÆs before he warp to me in the belt I took down his mate in a Domi I was only in a cruiser, however the match was one sided has his mate was only 4 months old and set up 4 mining. So I open a convo to the noob in the domi ask for 35 mill and he paid. I thought to my self now I have his isk should I have his ship (yes I did think that) but I thought whatÆs a bs kill when its to easy, so I let him go.
Then Grimarm warp in so I took him down to structure and covo him I thought if he so silly to warp in whilst I was taking his Corp mate down then heÆs either stupid or just plain dum, so I ask for 35 mill hoping he was not going to pay and guess what he did not
Now you know why I asked for 35 mill, and if any of you want to pay me a visit, I am know to hang around in a system called Gerper I hope to see u soon.

completly agree with you, yesterday i ganked a ferox in my zealot. I msg the pilot when she was into hull and she proptly refused the chat. So once i had her pod scrambled i asked again in local said "its your choise, you can pay a reasonable ransom on die" she logged, so i squished her
i would of asked for 7mill for the ferox, the price of the insurance. Would of save her mods, clone and potential implants quite stupid if you ask me, oh well
