Somebody asked the question - albeit in an offensive manner and got their topic locked 
Anyway, there is a valid RP reason for pirates to be ego-maniacs: reputation. The more they shout and brag, the wider-spread their name becomes, and the more likely that people will be scared of them. It makes sense for them even to make up stories about how they killed a fleet of 25 battleships in Yulai while they were in a Velator.
Well, okay, it makes sense for them to make up BELIEVABLE stories.

If they are only 'stories', why do people whine so loud about 'greif' then?

My personal belief is the opposite of most.
I believe that pirates generally destroy more people than they actually say. Mostly they do not publish details of victories unless significant people.
I beleive this as i hear more stories of victims of pirate attacks and these are not boasted about by pirates.
eg i heard that tlbc killed a corp of several megathrons and dom, but this was never posted or bragged about.
So maybe pirates are really shy modest people.

Here at The LBC we are not forum *****s. We will post about our kills every now and again if we kill someone who flames too much. Asisde from that we kill lots of ppl and its no big deal its our business.
Also we spend most our time needing to look at our screen not mindlessly mining. If we post it tends to be somthing of importance we want to say (or like now its waiting for the server to go back up).
