I've been at this cosmic signature for about 10 minutes. I can't get it to go above 55.5%. It is a Data Site. I'm scanning it at 0.25 AU with pinpoint formation right where it is! I know where it is because every time I scan it it isn't moving, so I know where it is and I'm scanning it, but it isn't doing anything. I've been able to scan every other signature in the system. I know how to scan, so don't tell me I'm scanning wrong.
Does anyone know why this happens?
And if this is in the wrong subforum, I'm very sorry. This seemed like the place to put it. |

My first question would be what your scanning skills are and what level they are at. My second would be what sort of ship and fit you are using. |

Do you: Have a ship with scan strength bonuses? Have a SISTERS probe launcher? Have SISTERS probes? Have Astrometrics trained to V? Have Astrometric Rangefinding trained to V? Have a rangefinding array fitted in a midslot? Have scanning rigs? Have scanning implants? Have all of your probes set to the smallest range?
If you answered "no" to any of the above, you aren't trying hard enough.

4 things affect your ability to scan a sig.
- The base difficulty of the sig (some are just flat harder to scan)
- Bonuses from your ship, as well as fitting mods and rigs (inlcuding the probes you're using).
- Your skills
- Implants.
There are sigs in the game that you cannot probe down without nearly maxed skills, even with implants and decent ship bonuses.

The signal strength of each signature is different and some will need a base probe strength to scan them to 100%. You can improve your skill, equipment or implants to get better results. |

My ship is a Heron. I have regular probe scanners (8 of them). I have Scan Rangefinding Array on it. I have regular probe launcher. Not enough money for sisters.
I have Astronomics Range Finding level 2.
I have Astronomics level 2.
I've never run into this problem out of the 50+ things I've scanned in the last 2 days... |

Certain types of signatures will have stronger signal strength than others. Also, with your astrometrics skills at level 2, that is still rather low relatively speaking. If you have been doing most of you scanning in high/low then you may have only ocassionaly run into trouble, but with your current skills it isn't surprising that you'll have sites you can't scan down.

Because it's a "harder" one. It's signal strenght is lower than all those you scanned before so you need better probe scan strenght to counter that. Training caldari frigate higher if possible will help. A sister of EVE launcher could help. Sister probes could help. Max level cov-op scanning ship could help. Implants could help. Scannign rigs could help.
THere is a lot you can do to help yourself complete the harder content. You just have to look for the info and apply it. |

It's sleepers site propably, you don't have enough skills to scan that. I had problem with those sites when in Stratios and my scanning skills are perfect. High end exploration sites with very good loot.

With his gear and skill, it does not have to be sleeper stuff. |

A sleeper cache site for example is very difficult to scan but the payouts are extremely good (and there is more involved than a regular exploration site).

Yeah, it's crazy that anyone would use anything else but T1 and low skills. What a waste of time and ISK to buy the expensive T2 gear and train up the skills to 5. |

Looks like my answer will be mostly redundant - but yes, some sigs are much harder to scan down than others. For example, even with more training, better equipment and a better ship, I wouldn't be surprised if you can't get past 98% on this particular sig. Only once you get really, really good will it become scannable. It's not a bug.
Generally, the harder to scan sigs do have better loot - but also can be quite dangerous, with effects that will blow up ships easily.

But yeah OP, it's your skills. The vast majority of sigs can easily be scanned down with low skills, but there are harder ones that will require better skills.

with your skills and equipment they would be suspect first , but lets assume they are not the problem.
sometimes scanning can be a lil goofy for some odd reason. you will get a result or a group that no matter what will not get to 100%
this is a bug and what usually works is to recover probes dock/leave system/or logout and back in, reattempt.
also beware of echos/ false positives, especially those you tend to get right when your on the edge of a sig. being hardheaded and trying to chase down a echo will cause you quite a bit aggravation.
when ever you suspect an echo either broaden the probe range and try and decipher which two are possible the same signal . then refocus and attempt to scan down those two signals the one that disappears from where it should be is the echo and you can then move the probes to where the other result should be approximately and 9 times out of 10 you will find the sig .
improving your scanning skills will aid in resolving these issues enabling you to spend less time second guessing your self and pinpointing those sigs.
good luck and have fun . |

But this is a PvE situation and the argument about pilot skill v character skill points isn't so relevant. In PvE skill points can be extremely important, especially for min/maxing.

It's your skills (assuming that "you know how to scan" as you said). Simply put you do not have the necessary scan strength to pinpoint that specific signature. Astrometrics II is quite low if you plan going into exploration - train that at least to IV. Also the subsequent skills should be trained to at least III (Astrometric Rangefinding, Astrometric Pinpointing and Astrometric Aquisition). I stopped having problems with this especially after Astrometrics V. :D
Also get a Sisters Core Probe Launcher and Sisters Core Scanner Probes (they will boost you scan strength A LOT when your skills are low). Jump into an Astero as soon as you can afford one (then again you know what they say about flying what you can't afford to lose).
Hope this helps and happy scanning!
P.S. Mail me for more details on exploration and scanning if you want - I might have an Astero lying around catching dust willing to give you, if you're looking to get into exploration and you prove to be a nice guy ;P (you're gonna have to fit it yourself thou, but I can provide a few pointers regarding that also).

You're probably looking at a sleep Cache of some sort, perhaps one if the larger ones. You would need top skills and very high end equipment to pin point it.
Remember Sisters equipment is tech 1 and therefore doesn't require max skills and can be a very good option, second they provide the best bonuses.
something else to that very few people bother with or remember, you can manually move your probes closer than the 0.25AU spacing by pressing and holdin the "Shift" key and clicking and dragging your probes closer to the sig. There can make a big difference if you'really really at maxed on your distance settings, or so you think.
One last thing. If you do run a sleeper cache, read up on it. They are an easy way to loose an expensively fitted ship. |
