Not to plug any specific hardware, but will eve someday be able to take advantage of physics accellerator cards like PhysX, or Havok?
These cards should be able to greatly enhance not the graphics, but the physics: smoke, debree, explosions, collisions etc will look a lot cooler and more realistic. I think it would be cool to be able to use some of these thingies....
(No I do not have one of these yet, since EVE doesn't support them, and there is no other game for me as long as EVE exists ) Isn't it great being a skill collector?

I hardly think spending time on something maybe 0.00001% of the playerbase will benefit from is a worthwhile allocation of resources for CCP
Cool yes, by all means, but hardly worth it. ---

And a huge GFX engine upgrade does what? Makes it prettier, just as the above would. Yet we're still getting that. Fact is, better graphics = more interest = more money for CCP = better game ---

The problem is that if the physics were to have any effect on gameplay other than just pretty graphics, the calculations would have to be done server-side, so that they are in-sync on all clients.
The servers don't have nearly the CPU power to do this.
If you mean simply a cosmetic change, you don't need fancy PhysX cards for that.

Edited by: Stabs on 20/11/2006 17:21:44 City of heroes/villains can use those physics cards (as it has ragdolls etc), currently they are a total waste of money. The difference they make is not worth how much they cost and only a few games support them.
All they do is let you have more physics objects moving around at once, something you probably won't even notice.

Those cards showed up late to the game.
They won't ever become standard gear in a gaming computer. Because in less than 2 years, we are going to see Fusion processors, where the graphics and CPU are integrated, and therefore can share processing, at extremely fast speeds. Meaning that they can handle the physics all by themselfs. And those $300 phys cards are going to be so much fluff.
If they had come out a few years ago, they might have had a chance, but as it is, most newer computers are sitting half idle while running even the newest games.
My processor hasn't seen 100% usage in a game... well ever. And thats just a 4000+ dual core. (and yes, I run UT2k4, BF2, PREY, all the high end graphics, and physics games)
And the current trend is to integrate, not de-integrate, so ANOTHER add on card, especialy one that isn't cheap isn't going to catch on with users. Sure there are those early adopter people, but thats hardly a significant market penetration. ______________________________________________ Such a heavy burden now to be the one Born to bear and bring to all The details of our ending

In my opinion, there's not enough in EVE that would utilize such a feature to make it worthwhile adding support for it. Seriously... the game already pays lip service to physics in general (inertia, anyone?). :)

What DS said is correct, changing how physics works in EVE would mean dramatic changes server-side in order for all the clients to remain sync so everyone would see the exact same thing.
The changes to the graphics engine (Trinity) is a client-side change which will use the existing data coming from the server, as it always has, and simply harnesses the full power of DX9 and video hardware to make it prettier game.
As has been said by a couple others here as well, the physics cards just simply are not worth their price considering the lack of support there really is for them. Besides, as Locke DieDrake mentioned, physics processing is soon to become integrated into future CPU and GPU processors. When that happens, then you will probably see more game companies take advantage of physics processing. ---

I can't be sure, but I get the faintest impression of these cards not being extremely popular...
Oh well, it was just a thought. Isn't it great being a skill collector?
