Hi. I currently have some 2 million SP in Space Ship Command (up to Caldari BS and Caldari Interceptors), Engineering, Missiles, Drones. I have crap gun skills, Mechanics Level 2, nothing more there, and now I've found out that Caldari and Missiles in general are teh suck. :P (I don't run missions.) My long term goal is to be able to fly direct damage BS'es and dish out major damage with them, both on long and on short range. I also would like to armor tank instead. And I don't really like drones. The big question is, what race should I skill for. I know that Gallente use Railguns just like Caldari, so there are some synergie effects there, but Gallente also go heavy on drones. :( Amarr I am not 100% sure if they are good for sniping and I've also read they have major cap problems. Minmatar on the other hand are said to have cruel skill requirements due to mixing projectile guns and missiles, shield and armor tanks. Or should I just stick with Caldari and wait for the new ships? |

Edited by: Earthan on 21/11/2006 21:54:07 Well problem with Eve is it got the flavour of month rotation. So waht i can recoomend now might not be good in2-3 months.
Every 2-3 months another races ships seems to be best then the nerf bat swings again.
Atm Caldari seems to be strongly falvour of the month having best ships.Raven scorpion, the ever feared upcoming rokh...With rokh they should get best sniper, in raven you got best npc+ very good close range ship with torp.Scorp /rook best ecm ships.
Gallente are ok imho but rumors are atm they got nerfed abit with ammar because of the cap prblems with reveltions.Gallente got the highest dmg guns in game balsters and ships designed for them, but they are ultra short range so it works only in small battles or 1-1.They also got good snipers ,best drones + their little weird style of ew ( dampneers.)I fly mostly gallente, and nearly all time it was ok tough i cant remember them being flavour of moment( there was a time balsters were pretty good).
Never flied ammar but heard they arent that good atm tough cant really comment as no personall exp.
My personal advise: specialize in 2 race ships/wepaons so when one gets nerfed you got second:) ( i got gallente and backup caldari) - A knight in space, war veteran. The Amazing Fire Eaters webpage |

Missile boats do a ton of damage, they actually do MORE damage to t2 ships than hybrids or lasers will do (mainly because hybrids/lasters are stuck in the same exact 2 types of damage, with missiles you chose the racial weak resist for t2 and the ships pop rather fast).
You are right, minnies are highly SP intensive UNLESS you pick either shield/armor and guns/missiles and then stick to the min ships that use what you picked (its not each ship can tank either way, they just have both kinds of ships available).
Personally i LOVE gal ships, yes the Hybrids are stuck in the same 2 damage types but on average hybrids do more damage than any of the other guns so it sort of balances out (not to mention they have thermal and kinetic so they do a decent amount of damage to both shields and armor while amaar does therm/em so they are HORRIBLE at killing armor tanks but great at killing shield tanks).
Minmatar can vary their gun across all 4 damage types and they can ALSO vary their missile launchers across all 4 damage types so they have a slight advantage but they pay for it in needing both gunnery skills AND missile skills (but they can neglect drones skills). The downside here is that projectiles typically do inferior damage so if you dont chose the correct ammo you pay for it (but if you chose correctly you do signifigant damage).
Gal ships arent left completly in the cold, they can carry drones (most gal ships can field a signifigant drone threat) to do specific damage types so they still have the ability to concentrate into one pool however they pay for this with limited drone space. While other races can carry all the different missile/projectile ammo, gal ships pay for this in the form of inability to cover the full spectrum at any given time, they must pick and choose what types to carry.
Most races use 2 weapon sysyems with the exception of amaar so no matter who you pick your going to NEED to spread your SP over 2 areas to get the most out of your ship. Gal - Hybrids/drones Caldari - Hybrids/missiles Minmatar - Missiles/projectiles Amaar - only lasers (SB's if you want to count them).
What i would reccoment is 1. Pick the tank you like, both shield and armor have their ups and downs 2. Pick the type of weapon you want to use. 3. Chose your favorite EW type
After you figure out that then you can pick a race with more certainty. The nerf bat swings around so randomly in this game that it is a bad idea to chose the flavor of the month ship or race, rather you should chose what you like because given time in eve it will have its moments of being overpowered and its moments of being underpowered.

One last advise the races have like storylin e characteristics and CCP seem to balance them closer and closer to the picture even if its not perfect at a given moment.
So it would go something like: Gallente specialist: close range most dmg, drones, dampners for ew, armour tank, good snipers with rails. Also tend to get some mwd bonus to close to oppoent faster.
Caldari: missile specialsits shield tanks, ew jamming specialists, long range specialists with rails.Usually slow ships with low agaility but good electronic systems
ammar: perfect armor tankers, lots of armour , slow, laser users.Pure tank and dmg.
Minmatar: Speed, agility, very versatile ships but ofc becuase of this no speciualists needs lots of sp . - A knight in space, war veteran. The Amazing Fire Eaters webpage |

Go with whatever appeals to you, but it sounds like Amarr are the way to go. We're religious zealots (always fun from an RP pov), most of our ships are gunboats (pulse/beam), and I don't yet know of an amarr ship that shield tanks.

Some important things to know if you are considering Amarr:
-We are NOT slow; in fact, IIRC, we have the second fastest average speed after Minmatar (doesn't make a lick of sense, but whatever...).
-We do have good tanks... but you will need to put projectiles on your ships as lasers simply suck too much cap to tank properly.
-Amarr ships are NOT noob friendly: the 10% cap reduction is not a bonus; it is a requirement.
-Amarr damage in PvP is entirely dependent on wether your adversary omnitanks or not... and many people do. FOR THE EMPEROR!

Hmm.. Seems to me like you're stuck between a Rokh and a hard place. (Such a bad pun. )
I'd say stick with Caldari. They use railguns too so if you're interested in hybrids but dislike close range, Caldari is the way to go.

Im with Nir, train hybrids and get a Rokh for teh ownage, if your really unhappy you can then train for armour and gal ships which are good from the off. Amarr would be a good choice if it wasnt for their cap and dmg problems...

Stick with caldari and train up your hybrid skills so that later on you can cross into training blasters and flying Gallente. If you have tech 2 rails all you need to train to use the tech 2 blasters is motion prediction. And everyone should really have good drone skills as it's such a nice boost to DPS. These two things will allow you to float through Caldari and Gallente ships. Even armor tanking only requires 3 skills (but you need the 4 compensation skills if you want to be great at it). Might as well train them up.

Every race has their advantages and disadvantages. There's no best race, just different play styles and some are more popular than others. As much as people cry about it, the game IS balanced.
Pick what you think is the coolest and the way to be good is by training your skills to match your play style. Picking a race is not all that related to being good or bad.
(this is for PvP i'm talking about, NPCing Caldari win hands down)
