My last problem with Mission running and my beloved Merling got solved, thanks to the community. I am still on L1Q14. My motivation is a bit low to go on missioning the same 5 missions without some bits of excitment in between.
I read alot about ratting and to go out and hunt the belts. Well. So now how do you do it, or better, how can I do it? I still fly my Merling with 3 Malkuth, 2 150mm Rails, Shield Boost/Extender/Kin. Where can I go without being ripped in a splitsecond? And how is it done? Warp to the next friendly looking belt and fly around until somethin pops? Or just warp there scan a bit and if nothing red is found move to the next?
thank you in advance
regards avy
almost forgot. my next ship will be a 5x assault launcher caracal...(I hope this is the right way, although I am really wanting a Harpy just for the looks. Could I do L2 missions in a Harpy safely or do i have to get a cruiser)
forgive my newbiness.

Edited by: Pellaeon DuGalle on 22/11/2006 07:58:31 Ratting is simply shotting at NPC piRATes. They are essentially the same things you shoot in missions, but out of a mission context.
They occur in 0.8 space and below, inclusive. So take your merlin and head to a 0.8 system, and head into a belt. If there are red NPC ships, shoot them, same as always. If there are no ships, just go to the next belt and keep looking. No scanning is required. If you're comfortable, keep heading into lower and lower security ratings.
Just a quick note, judging by your setup and "I do all lvl 1 missions", you can probably rat down to 0.5 or so, if you dare . Try not to head down to 0.4 and below, because players can shoot at you without NPC police interference.
The isk is usually better in mission (ok, lvl 1 missions are terrible for rewards. You get far more form lvl2 onwards), but the loot is far better while ratting. Its a trade-off.
edit: a harpy will handle lvl2 missions with no problems. Many people use harpys to do lvl 3 missions too.

A tip someone here pointed out to me, is if you train connections to level 3, a single L1 mission will get you up to using a L2 agent. But, you really need a cruiser to do them, and you may need to isk grind on L1s for a little if you are a total newblet.

You should be able to do level 3 missions in a Harpy just fine, although the Hawk might be better.

Understand that T2 ships only start to work as advertised if you have tons of other high skills and T2 modules, so they're not useful for a starting player. You're much better off with a bigger ship which uses less SP to operate and works reasonably well, they're also cheaper to buy and cheaper to lose.
Forget about T2 stuff for a while, get a Caracal for lvl 2 missions and a Ferox (or Drake by that time) for lvl 3's. That is IF you want to do missions because there's nothing that makes you do them, you don't HAVE to do anything.
If you get your skills up a bit take a Merlin into low sec and go rat there, before you do that learn about the dangers of lowsec and how to shield yourself from them. First of all you'll make good money, secondly you'll learn about how to use your ship and thirdly you'll get experience at being attacked/killed/podded. In other words very valuable lessons at the expense of frigate cost... can't get any better.

Merlin can rat down to 0.5, just take care and warp away if you start to get hurt. Fit longer range weapons and shield hardner for rats main damage type as per missions and you should have no problem.
If you have no implants and if you want to take the risk you could go into lowsec - without a cruiser and with modest skills stick to 0.3 or 0.4 tho. You will probably get killed by a player pirate at some point so be ready to run.

personally if you are unsure of the situation i would stay away from 0.4 and under for the time beign and consoliadate around 0.6 to 0.8 as these npcs are or will be easier and more accessible for you to kill. 0.5 may deem a lil tough on your merlin unless you have a strong tank etc a caracal with a moderate tank however will be fine in 0.5 and likely with 0.4 except obviously the added danger that 0.4 an being ganked by rl rats may prove to much A soul jah |

Wow, some good advice and some not so good. Really, with a good frig set-up you will have no problems ratting in 0.4 and 0.3 belts. I take my punisher down all the time, and occassional have to fight off and kill a every now and then. And this is an alt, I have less than 1 mil SP and don't care, it is a break from using a battleship and actually more fun. Just grab some skill books and find a decent 0.4 system to serve as your base of operations. Getting your skills to support you using a basic PvP set-up, webber, warp scram and you are good to go. The best part, if I lose a punisher and get podded, I am only out a few million isk depending on mods. I just use the mods I pick up while ratting/ and it cost me next to nothing. Don't be afraid to try new things, if you survive a week without losing a ship you can make your first 10 to 20 million fairly quick and not worry so much about losing your ship. Enjoy

Your Merlin can easily take rats in .3 systems, and possbily .2 systems depedning on skills and practise.
Your main concern will be Destroyer spawns, as those spell doom for any T1 frigate.
As to the missions, an Assault Frigate can easily handle any level 2 mission, even if your SP is not uber. I would not recommend them for lvl 3s though, as i tried it and got smoked pretty quickly. Perhaps another 6 months from now i'll give it a shot and see how my character has improved hehe, but def not SOP (standard operating procedure). Use a battlecruiser, and even then dont solo things till you have your tanking skills trained up well.

If you are going to venture into low sec (0.4 and below) then your best bet is to find an emptyish system and learn to check local. Have the local chat open at all times and check anyone by right clicking on their face and do 'Show Info'. If they ahve a minus security rating the chances are they will try to find you and kill you.
If you see someone like this then get to a safe and wait for the guy to pass through or get bored.
I would probably suggest a system where the belts are more than 14.2 AU away from any gate as well because a pirate will do a 360 scan to see if there is anything in the vicinity as soon as he jumps in. Once he sees you on the scanner it won't be long before hes in your belt.

To add in on the topic: I have a Thorax, armor-tank build and shortrange blasters. Armor Hardeners and alike. You think its save for me to go ratting in 0.8 and below, without much problem?
Thanks. _________________

If you fit an afterburner or a MWD, you should be able to go down to 0.4 / 0.3 easily.
Standard low-sec warnings apply (see above posts) if you're venturing below 0.5 sec space.

You can even rat in 0.0 (although not all spawns of all factions) in a Thorax by MWDing into range, NOSsing to keep your tank up, and maintaining traversal - but if you do that you have to kill all the support frigates/destroyers with your drones ASAP.

Easily...
My osprey can tank the spawns in .5 systems while mining while my four drones (that i have the absoute minimum skills for) take them out.
Below .5 some of the cruiser spawns get a little tricky, but again i can take out 1 cruiser, or at least 3 destroyers with my drones while tanking in the osprey. But if you see a 2/3 cruiser spawn when your in anything smaller than a cruiser, or a cruiser not fitted for battle you should run. (But if you see a 3 cruiser spawn, one is usually a special one that drops nice loot)

Thank you for all the advice. Tried ratting in 0.6 and almost fell asleep while circling 10 belts. Will go further down in sec rating until I get blown away :)
Something else...I was thinking of moving my PVE base to Jove Empire. I see 0.5 systems there with lots of belts and nearly not traffic at all. As the search "feature" is out of order for some time now I can't find any info about that system.

Jove Empire is closed. The Jove like their privacy ;)
I think the Jove systems are used by devs and GMs sometimes, but normal players can't get there.

Tooooo bad. I knew there would be something about it. I just hoped it would be too remote for anyone to care to go there....
