4 I'd recommend:
1) Gears of War: Yes its a wee bit short but so much fun. Graphics are good, gameplay is a bit of a fresh take on a very jaded genre, multi-player (a few morons notwithstanding) is pretty good fun plus it has split screen co-op. Once you get used to the cover mechanic it works really well and you miss it in other games. And best of all is sneaking up behind someone and running them through with the chainsaw, only kill more fun than this is grenade tagging.
2) Dead Rising: You mentioned this in your post and you're bang on - running zombies over with a lawnmower is a great stress relief. Loads to do, find, lots of weapons etc. Multiple endings, lots of scoops to find. You definitely get your moneys worth from it.
3) Dead or Alive 4 - Even tho im rubbish at it i love the series and a good beat em up is essential.
4) Madden 07 / NHL 07 / PES6 or FIFA 07 - guess it really depends what sports you like and im not debating PES vs FIFA with anyone so id just pick whichever you like the most as they are all good games.

I recently got an Xbox 360 myself and I got 4games (because they were in a deal together) I have Dead Rising (very fun), Splinter Cell Double Agent (sneak sneak, kill kill), Lost Cause (very short but fun in small doses) and PES6 (havent played much but multiplayer is good). I am wanting to get Gears of War sometime soon and I have not got Xbox Live yet because I have not sorted out my router.
I would strongely recomend Splinter Cell DA and Dead Rising as good singleplayer games and what I have seen of Splinter Cell online it looks fun.

Gears of War: Kaboom! it r awesome! Tomb raider: Short, but a great game (don't let the last few turkey's put you off, this one is awesome!) PGR3: zoooooooooom! The photo perfect trotting around your own garage looking at all your pimpness is worth it alone Splinter Cell: much the same as the other with a few new tricks and gadgets and looks superb!

Edited by: Tripp Orsam on 23/11/2006 08:13:33 if you are into driving games i can safely recomend both PGR3 and Test Drive Unlimited. PGR3 is more about races as all the action happens on race tracks vs other cars with some time trial challenges and cone madness thrown in, the driving mechanics of this game are awesome as is the multiplayer.
Test Drive is just as good but is set in a humungous environment that has no loading screens at all (unless you teleport to a location via the map) so you can actually drive on open roads for hours with no loading screens and never going over the same piece of road twice. I prefer Test Drive myself as you spend alot of time weaving through traffic at insane speeds and the roads really vary quite alot from evil twisty mountain paths to the multi lane freeway variety. Test Drive also has a ton of content, I think I've played this for over 40 hours and have only unlocked around 50% of the races and missions.
Edit: another thing I should also mention about test drive is its kind of a driving MMO, when you are moving around between singleplayer challenges you will see other players driving around the island and you can challenge them to some 1 on 1 fun or you can move to a multiplayer race area and join up to 8 others in a race. Also A recent patch made the motorbikes handle alot better.
As mentioned above Gears of War is just too cool if you are into action shooters, but this one definatly brings something fresh to the table, I have never had to use the surrounding cover so much in any other shooter, if you just run around in the open you are toast, and they added some really cool moves to help you move from one piece of cover to another. It's also the best looking game I've played in all my 25+ years of gaming.
enjoy your 360!

1. Gears of War Very fun game, and the main storyline actually has a lot of replayability for a "shooter" type game. Everyone else has pretty much covered this one.
2. Chromehounds 5,000 ton mechs, explosions, terrain affecting combat, squad based or solo combat... The offline storyline is a good way to learn the game, while the online war is a load of fun, playing in squds against other people.
3. ???
4. ???
Those are the only two I can suggest right now, since they are the only ones that I have played so far.

have to say this gets my /seconded for the day. But if you're really into the 360...
Get Final Fight 3 as well as Dead or Alive 4.
So in case the missus is home, you can always say the fighting sounds were from the boxing game (unless you were using the females, shame!)

Get Fight Night Round 3. Get Project Gotham Racing 3 and Perfect Dark Zero (they're each $20 at Wal-Mart), then snag Gears of War and maybe Dead Rising.

TBH the only 2 reasons why you'd get a 360 is DoA4 and GoW. The rest seem fluff no offence to 360 fans.
I'm not too happy about the PS3 and the Wii either though, so when in Rome...

1. Chrome hounds. If you love tweeking set ups in eve this is the game for you. The possibilities are vast. Only down side is you will learn to hate double doubles.
2. PSU, a fun romp. Like a party game over the net.
3. Oblivion. This game has so much gameplay it's scarey. I've played it 60 plus hours, done a tone of crap and have yet to touch the main quest.
4. live arcade. The games there are top notch manic fun and easy to do in short spurts.
5. though it's not out yet, mass effect. That game is a scifi geeks dream, and the main reason I purchased the system.
