Here's one origin I found:
"Nerf - A slot car is not a nerf mobile, but you can't tell that to some racers. Technically speaking, a nerf is when one car, usually the one on the inside lane, slides up into the lane next to it and causes the car in that lane to de-slot. With just a little practice, an accomplished "nerfer" can perform this function at just the right place and time. I have been asked many times of the origin of the word NERF, and after extensive study have found it to be derived from a Greek word meaning "Steersman". Which is most likely why Princess Lea called Hans Solo a NERF HERDER in the Empire Strikes Back. The Greek word is it's origin, but in modern computer gaming, the term means to take away someone's power. This definition has it's derivation from the Nerf Ball and Nerf Gun, where something with power was made less powerful. I think either definition could apply to the Slot Racing World since when you "Nerf" someone, you are both "Steering" them in a different direction, and removing their power to win the race."

Definately not an EVE term. Came long before.
urbandictionary
Quote: The term "nerf" comes from the online gaming world of Ultima Online.
At one point in the game, the developers reduced the power of swords in melee combat.
This resulted in players complaining that it was like they were hitting each other with nerf bats, not swords.
From then on, if ever something gets made less worth while than it had been originally, it has been considered a 'nerf'.
"Oh man, they reduced the dmg on the berserker class and now it's totally nerfed!"
"****, the Devs nerfed those axe's real good!"

I still have my semi automatic nerf launcher up in the basement somewhere.
It comes from FPS games where, if a gun got changed people used to say "I might aswell shoot you with a frickin' nerf gun"

Doesnt nerf come from a game? Called nerfball?
Nerfing = softening things up. Nerfball = a game where 2 teams play a taglike game where they hit each other with a very soft ball a.k.a. nerfball.

'Nerf' refers to those toy guns that shoot foam projectiles. The term has been around a lot longer than EVE. The act of 'nerfing' something is to make it as useful as a foam bullet or a chocolate fireguard, i.e. less powerful.

Nerfing was used as a description of deliberately damaging a competitors car in motorsport as far back as I can remember (long time). probably the slotcar thing came from that

Edited by: Farrellus Cameron on 27/11/2006 09:25:21 Edited by: Farrellus Cameron on 27/11/2006 09:21:25 NERF = Non-Expanding Recreational Foam
It refers to anything made out of Non-Expanding Recreational Foam. There are nerf frisbees, guns that shoot nerf balls, and nerf bats. Nerf makes things safe. Cover a bat with it and you can beat the crap out of someone without doing much real damage.
That's the concept behind using it in game terminology. When they nerf something in a game it means they made it less powerful, less dangerous, i.e. 'safer.' It's used in pretty much all MMO's because developers are constantly making changes to balance things out. However, it's been used long before MMO's and in many different contexts.
Devs in this game often use the phrase: "bringing out the nerf bat."

A mmorg that the term nerf was used that predates ultima online please show me. The only MMORG i can think of before hand is "The Realm online" and that game had so few people playing it i doubt it would have started anything.
