Ive recently built a new computer, the only thing I was short of was a graphics card
My friend said he had a faulty one kicking around and asked if I wanted to try it/test it as he only used it in his and it could have been his computer.
Graphics card in question is ATI Radion X1900XT 512mb version (256mb version below) Linkage
Anyway I tried it, and the card runs perfectly once the system is running. The problem I have is that sometimes the card doesnt initialise the monitor output when it gets to windows, Windows splash screen then monitor turns off.
It must be a driver issue as when the drivers are removed, or if you boot into safe mode/vga mode, its fine (apart from lack of drivers). I have tried different versions of catalyst, and also tried omega drivers as well, all with the same issue.
The question I have is, if I was to buy this card off him, as its a nice card, how much should I offer him for it? It out of warranty as he has taken a dremel to the heatsink surround so it would fit in his case
Bearing in mind a replacement Nvidia 7950, or Radeon X1950Pro, would cost me about ú190, and technically would be a downgrade from the dodgy one i got.
Thanks in advance

Why not RMA the card to the manufacturer?

I wish, or he wishes rather....the box was rather dusty when he presented it to me so I think he just tossed it aside and bought a new one anyway
Which physical damage done to the card though, i dont think they will allow an rma (even though its only to the plastic bit that covers the heatsink |

Could always get a replacement heatsink or the like... and then send it back

get an 8800, a single card will outpreform 95% of the SLI's out there, and SLI'd 8800's are well, overkill since there isn't a processor out there that can feed it the data required to use an SLI'd setup. Fear the Ibis of doom!

I sure hope he took off the heatsink first and properly cleaned it from the metal dust after the operation. That itsybitsy stuff can have nice effects on circuitboards.
