Yesterday I went on a long pirating trip. No doubt it was more then 40 jumps through low-sec areas finding targets. Im was experimenting with a cruiser setup I really like and to get the feel for it I fitted two stabs on it, to not loose it and having to spend time buying and refitting all mods. I would like to add that no other mods really "fitted" in those slots. I had the cap I need and I had practically no power grid left.
During the night I attacked several ships, outlaws, T2 frigs, cruisers, BCs, miners and ratters. All in all a very nice ship, sadly I only got one kill. Im was not the only one fitting stabs that night and alot of ppl seemed to have friends around. On one occation I attacked a BC in a belt, everything went fine, I popped his drones and started working on his armor. Then 4 of his friends jumps into local. I try to finish him off but my dps is to low, I couldnt kill him in time, one of his friends warps to belt in a sacrilage, starts to shoot and scram. I warp out. After 15min waiting at safespots and watching some smack in local I decide to leave. There are two gates and there are now 5 of them in local. Mostly in T2 cruisers. I scan a gate empty!, nice. I warp there but just as I arrive two of them warp to the gate. I hit my mwd and just barely make it out.
Later I engage a outlaw in a claw next to a gate. Everything is turning out ok but again my dps is to low (gotta work on my skills), he deaggros and jumps out. Other side of gate he is waiting for me and this time he gets the upperhand, I thanked my stabs as I warped away.
A bit later on talking to someone in corp I stopped next to a gate. An outlaw in a ishkur jumps in. Not wanting the ishkur pilot to make the same escape as the wolf pilot I decide to warp to a belt to lure him there. He follows me and the fight is on. Once again my dps is crap and I realize this isnt a setup vs users with drones. After popping one if his drones Im almost down to structure I warp out. Smack again, about my stabs ofc.
Later I managed to get popped by sentries when I was gonna duel a guy and was a bit to tired to understand that he hadnt aggrod me yet :D
The guy in the ishkur is reason Im starting this thread, he got me to think about "pirating".
Heres the "intresting" part.
When it comes to pirating in EvE what aspects are (most) important in you opinion? heres what comes into my mind To be honorable? Always have fair fights? Maximizing profit? Having the most fun as possible? Generating a sence of threat to ppl in belts?
I myself always honor my ransoms, I would never dishonor a 1v1. I know how frustrating it is to have ppl stab out. And I can agree that Im in a way "dishonorable" because Im fitting stabs. But on the other hand fitting stabs.. * It saves me lots of time not having to gather all my modules again and get a new ship. * I can easely engage in fights I wouldnt otherwise testing my ship out. Increasing my experience and getting more intresting fights then the "I know Im gonna kill him belt gank" * It brings the most profit because I suffer less losses. * It brings the most fun because I dont have to fly around in a pod - shuttle - ship gathering new mods.
I thought "pirating" (and yes heres someone once again trying to define this word) was about making isk by living on other players. Generating fear in the carebears. Not flying about looking for fair fights and honor them to the death.
I mean would a real 0000-1800th century pirates engage a combat ship fairly superior to theirs or would they run? What targets would such a pirate be looking for? Well targets they know they can make a profit on.
Is it just me or is the word pirating /= honorable? Is there a "pirates of the carribiean pirating code" you have to honor in EvE in order to be called pirate?
He long post was just very boored during DT

To make alot of isk. fighting 1v1 isnt really about honour to me (its a game) its about the challenge the thrill of the fight the adrenaline rush. Dont really care about what people think of my char as long as they aint hunting 23/7.
And i wouldnt be doing any of this if i didnt get one bit of enjoyment from it.

You can't sell honour, so it's completely worthless.
I'm kind of regretting picking a Japanese-looking name because it makes people think I'm supposed to be some kind of honourable space-Samurai or something. Why are people shocked when an outlaw with a bounty uses unfair tactics to kill them? Maybe they shouldn't fly around with such expensive stuff in their cargo. _________________________________________________________

Well, unlike some, many merchants don't see the loss of a ship as an expected part of doing business (I do - I expect a certain loss rate based on my tactics).
Ships will get shot, and you will get podded. Insurance hardly covers the loss of a ship with good mods - and it doesn't replace implants.
Is it unfair to attempt to corner the market on tobacco in one region, knowing the prices in adjacent regions, and knowing this in advance, and knowing that you're the only one in the next hour or so who will notice this across regions?
What's unfair in eve?
Well, logging off seems unfair as a tactic...
I might think some things are lame - but that doesn't make them "unfair".

A celestis. So far I consider it a VERY good solo pirating ship.

You know if you had fit some damage mods instead of stabs you might have won some of those fights. |

No I wouldnt with the skills I have currently I need nos for my cap (cap relays aint sufficient if nos is replaced by a gun) and only have two high slots left. I could replace it with two cap relays and replace one nos with another rail but the dmg difference wouldnt be huge. I dont think I could run it though. With a bit better skills Im gonna replace one of the NOSs and then maybe a dmg mod would be to consider. For dmg I have drones.

Well I never fit stabs , and haven't pirated that much , but as I see things they're counterproductive when it comes to engaging strong targets you're not sure to defeat. You're lowering your chances of winning to escape easier. Sure , the experience you gain fighting lots of different targets is valuable , and the amount of money saved considerable. But you might not know what your fully fitted ship is capable of. Although I've read about stabbed pirate squads engaging in very effective guerrilla tactics to down bigger targets.
As for honor , shrug it off. Being a pirate means that nobody has to dictate your behavior , anything required to be successful is justified. Honoring ransoms is not a duty to your victim , but to your profession - it became a widely followed rule because even pirates care about their reputation. But offering fair fights is definitely not our job.

It's the same old argument I guess. If you intend to WIN a fight and not run, there is almost always something that will be more usefull than a stab. You fit two stabs I think, so a damage mod and a cap power relay would have given you more damage and the cap to run at the higher ROF. I guess I just see stabs as the cowards way out and I for one look foward to the fixes to them.

The freedom to blow up who I want, when I want and where I want. Piracy, when done properly, keeps the politics of EVE the simplest.

Here's my take as a 5 week old pirate:
I pirate for fun and profit. It is surprisingly difficult as a young player to just break financially even pirating. There is a steep learning curve. I rat when i'm broke.
That said, I feel that my skills as a PvPer are improving at a much greater rate than if i was more cautious about diving into low-sec and trying to warp scramble someone. I now know how to survive in low-sec as an outlaw, what the pitfalls are, and who to watch out for.
No fights in EVE are fair. There are too many variables. Skillpoints, mods, allies in the area, and pvp experience all come into play. As a pirate you gather the best intelligence you can about a potential target, then decide if attacking that taget is worth the risk of losing your ship/pod.
An interesting anecdote to illustrate this point: Last week I was flying around in my Rupture looking for targets and saw an Ishkur ratting in a belt. We were the only two undocked in the system, and he had no corp or alliance mates in system. He was four months older than me. I didn't have the best mods on my rup (finding quality mods at decent prices is the hardest part about being outlaw). I also, being a somewhat noob, didnt realize that the ishkur was an assault frig and not a regular frig. So I jumped him, thinking he would pop like the Rifters and Merlins always do. The match turned out to be much closer than that and by the time he popped i had 400 structure hitpoints left. I had miscalculated his capabilities due to my ignorance and almost lost my ship because of it. But, as they say, fortune favors the bold and i looted him of a whole slew of t2 equipment including 13 t2 drones, 2 t2 railguns, 8000 rounds t2 ammo, etc. The whole incident netted me about 4-5 mil isk, or about half the price of a low sec rupture without mods. Did I profit? yes. Was it worth the risk? no. I figure that fight is a 50-50 chance for either to win so, in order to make out financially I would have to gain double the cost of my rupture for the win.
This is why I try to always choose targets i can beat. Fair fights (which i guess means 1v1 where both parties agree to fight) are for chumps and little kids who dont understand how to make a profit pirating. I honor ransoms because it is financially beneficial to have a good reputation. If i agree to duel you, however, be aware i will try to screw you over any way i can. I like to know im going to win.
In terms of stabs, I don't use them for reasons outlined above. Stabs are bet-hedging mods that allow you to extracate yourself from a situation you wont win. Unfortunately, if you fit stabs, the number of engagements you can win drops significantly.
