Q: Why did bookmarks within X distance of celestial objects not get deleted? was this not the primary reason warp to 0 was implemented?
If this has already been answered by a DEV please link me to the post and close this thread, though after searching through the feedback thread and gen discussion I dont see any reply.
Cheers

iirc one dev said that it was estimated to take a few hundred hours to go throw the database and remove the right bm's

1) Bookmarks in your People & Places folder were NOT responsible for the huge server loads. Devs have clearly stated at some point that it was BM's as *items* (i.e. in cans in hangars etc) that created the load. Therefore there's no real need to delete them all afaik.
2) Never heard of tactical BMs? If they'd deleted all BM's then mid-safes, sniping points, behind-gate bubble avoidance points, scouting spots, scanning spots etc would all have disappeared too which would change the face of 0.0 pvp *massively* and effectively kill EVE.

Point 1, the devs said clearly they were deleting the BMs, however link me to where the devs said what you claim. Point 2, read my post, i clearly said within X distance of celestial objects, not safe snipes deepsafes etc

First, I don't recall anyone saying that the devs would delete our BMs for us. We were told we should delete them ourselves.
1) Bookmarks in P&P still took up space on the database, hence they would have been a contributing factor towards database lag.
2) Which is why they didn't do it for us.

Edited by: DirtyHarry on 29/11/2006 20:57:09 I just found this which was edited and added to the patch notes within the last day or so
"Note: Normal bookmarks will not be affected by this change. Due to the time it would take to automatically delete them, instajump bookmarks will need to be manually deleted."
However im guessing there are thousands of inactive chars with a ton of BMs on them, and many players wont read the info asking to delete their bookmarks / people who are too lazy or are unable to delete them due to freezing when opening places tab in P+P. Im only asking because i believe alot of extra resources could be freed up, im quite happy with the warp to 0 feature.

Also, I was under the impression that it wasn't just bookmarks in cans / shuttles that was the problem. I thought that stuff in the people/places was still a problem, too, because every bookmark in the game has a unique database ID.
Didn't a dev say at one point that bookmarks account for like 70% of all the item database entries in the game? That can't all be in shuttles and cans.

Where did they say it was "as items"? Everytime you view your BMs (ie. in P&P or right-clicking in space), the server has to load the BMs. Tell me, how is getting rid of the BMs not helping the server?

Deleted all of mine prior to the patch except the region I am currently in. I was surprised to see them in P&P when I logged on last night. _______________________________________________

For the record
Quote: 'Warp to 0 km' will be added as an option to the 'Warp' menu. This is being done in conjunction with the deletion of 'Instajump' bookmarks, a major contributor to database and game lag. It is highly recommended for players to delete their instajump bookmarks before the Revelations deployment. This action will improve client performance and decrease log-in times. Note: Normal bookmarks will not be affected by this change. Due to the time it would take to automatically delete them, instajump bookmarks will need to be manually deleted.

BM's themselves dont create lag (just use space), using bm's make the lage.

Frankly, they could check the BMs a player has in system next time that player is warping accross that system and delete all BMs around 40km of a celestial.
Or anything along the line, it's not that hard. I deleted all my BMs save the tacticals and it was real fast (I mean, the process of deleting them, not browsing through thousands of BMs which to keep or boot). ____________________ A gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipe, but who does not. |

I think it was mentioned somewhere that there was 270million BMs on the database, and an automated process to remove them all would have increased the planned 1 day downtime to something like 11 days!

Copying BMs caused a lot of lag.
At least now, there will be less of that sort of thing going on.

Around 10k of my BMs were deleted, the rest had to be deleted by manually. And the main reason for the lag with BM copying was a slow implementation, which CCP admitted a few months back.

Bookmarks in P&P causes lag every time you jump system, every time you log in your character and every time you open P&P.

Why dont they just delete all the instas when the cluster is down? Of course its not going to be a good idea to delete when people log in, because then you have 10000 people deleting them at the same time...
If done offline, the DB could just delete them one at a time. Should be much quicker, no?

And he's right. I kept all my BM's until after the patch. Yesterday late I decided to delete them. 4000 BM's later the effect was VERY noticeable, particularly when jumping from system to system, docking/undocking etc. It really does make a difference.
But by all means, keep them. If it means you will load slower or lag out on system jumps, it just makes it easier to shoot you. :) . Rimhawk Winds of Vengeance (W8V) |

5 hours and still no people and places content loaded.
There's a threshold at around 15k to 17k bookmarks where people with more actually have so many that people and places won't load. We can't delete our bookmarks.
Note: 15k to 17k bookmarks is about the bookmarks for around 60% of EVE's pre-Kali accessible gates (which is a bloody lot more than normal people needed). Most people would overestimate the number of bookmarks they actually have. - EVE is sick. |

With the update to eve all settings were probably deleted, and maybe including some folders (bugs?) so you may have 10000 instas in your P&P and not in a folder and this would take an age to load.
So people may not have had there instas deleted, just some folders...
I manually deleted 14 regions of instas down to only stations (72 bm's left). I kept the stations, because has anyone tried to select a Gate or station if people are appearing/disappearing around you (when set to sort by distance)? ______
