Anyone encounter this error? I need to know how to fix this so I can get the game to run on my laptop, that's where I play my alt char.

Install DirectX 9.0c and that will fix your problem

I went to http://www.toymaker.info/Games/html/d3dx_dlls.html to download d3dx_30.dll (or something like that... its the 30 that counts) and the problem was fixed. FYI apparantly it checks whether your windows version is "genuine" (or at least it did for me) and that is something to look out for.

0. Exit EVE 1. Open task manager and make sure there's not a ghost client running around (I had exefile.exe still running even though client was gone). 2. Run RedistD3DXOnly.exe in the CCP/EVE/bin directory. 3. Restart client, log in, and unleash your evil plots upon the unsuspecting server population once again.

Yeah but you really should update your directX. There are other places you can get the file from that dont require the Windows Genuine Advantage check

There was a bunk version of DirectX 9 C, which didn't install all the required files. After they fixed this issue in the first release of 9 C, it never appeared as a 'new/needed' install. (Wouldn't that make it direct X 9 D?)
Anyhow, you can get the full redist, without windows genuine auth, here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/d/4/6/d46cc24d-33df-4727-aa89-9512513c67d3/directx_oct2006_redist.exe

Went to microsoft.com and installed the latest version of DirectX. That did the trick. For grins I also went to the website for my video card and made sure I had the latest driver

I downloaded the latest version of DirectX 9.0c and installed it. I uninstalled and reinstalled the client. I downloaded a fresh client and reinstalled it. I ran the redistdirctx.exe file in the bin, all to no avail. Still, I get the splash screen then a command window opens, and then I get the error message warning me that the game may not run and sure enough, it won't. So none of these suggestions have fixed my problem.
